Powers & Abilities Is Gear 5 too silly for a great fight?

#1
Is anyone else annoyed with Gear 5? You guys remember when Gear 4 was introduced? the hype? Or even when he fought Blueno with gear 2? does it feel the same with gear 5? Did you really enjoy the silly cartoon fight of gear 5 luffy vs kaido after waiting so long for a yonko fight? was it really the epic fight we wanted?

Now imagine him fighting the main villain at the end of the story with the same silly powers!!

One piece has always been comedic, but the fights were still epic. gear 5 feels like "too much of anything...."

Take Egghead arc for example Gear 5 did nothing!! watching the anime i dreaded luffy scenes cause they were just slowing down the pace and did nothing.

Why can't luffy be in gear 5 but use the same technics as when he was in gear 2,3 or 4 but with awakening,i think that would have been a lot cooler.

Gear 5 feels like a whole different devil fruit!! Luffy has to learn to use new devil fruit powers.

It is. But Oda said he didn't care, he wants to draw stupid fights with Luffy, gags are more important. These low IQ people or children that are less than 4 or 5 years old enjoy it and think it's funny.
He should have sticked with the Gomu Gomu no Mi and haki. Now we have a joke of a god who fights carelessly and looks like a fodder everytime he turns into Nika form. And it's not even funny.

When done correctly the goofiness can be super enjoyable in one piece fights. Problem is G5 tries to do too much. The eye gag, the over animated movements, the stupid faces, it’s too much.

Water Luffy was goofy, but it had so much deeper emotion that it worked incredibly well. Luffy was fighting hella goofy against Arlong, but again Luffys fighting style had more than just slapstick comedy back then too.

Oda just needs to tune G5 down a little bit and it would be wayyyy better than G4 which always thought was boring in comparison to Luffys normal fighting style.

Always luffy powers has timelimit. Is very fail idea. You never see a good fight. Or timelit or goofyness will stop the fight. Even Dragonball has better fights. One piece doesn't worth anymore. Last year's changed alot. Is more gods vs noobs. And useless goofy fights.

The majority of his abilities aren't the problem.. it is the design and his demeanor... Turning into a genie ?fine really. Using the ground to poke the opponent like he did bersus Lucci? Excellent. Taking less damage once again even from haki hits? More than fine.

The constant lauging and ridiculong of all situations is the problem..
Oda has said in the past that he can't compete in fighting scenes with a manga like DB,but he can with the addition of drama. Well, this is shit was not the way to go. Having Luffy being deadpan in situations like in Water Luffy is ok.. A gag to lift a bit of tension ,that is still there, but not remove him completely eith a hyahyahya Luffy..

His desing doesn't help either when he wants to be seen serious. "Oda" has changed his desing and draws Luffy too childlike along with that shit G5.

This Noddy face can't be taken seriously.

I enjoy G5 forms and attacks but it's meaningless because the effects has no functional consequence. Kizaru and Saturn may have became pizzas, but it's meaningless because:

- their becoming pizzas doesn't affect their abilities/powers.

- their pizza form efortlessly returned to normal and they continued fighting like nothing happened.

Offered solution: If G5's attacks have ability to thange the form of the targets, it should've altered their shape, form, function, and even ability permanently as that altered form. Kizaru becoming pizzas should make his body's consistency become pizza literally: dough, not skin-bones-muscle, and not able to become light. Luffy can eat him literally as food, killing him in a somewhat comedic way, not bloody, just REAL effect and consequence. Not just gimmick.

No it is way too goofy

I am not saying every fight has to be some edgelord no smiles one but you can fight goofy and include comedy in fights without taking away the overall tension and seriousness from the fight (like Luffy vs Arlong and Crocodile)

In those fights, I genuinely laughed but also never felt the tension go away

I just cannot take G5 seriously. Feels way too forced. Every fight is horribly drawn and it's just spamming the same unfunny jokes like bro

That's the natural progression of a power that allows its user to inflate their hand like a Tom and Jerry bit as seen all the way back in EL. Seeing Luffy manipulate himself and his environment to such absurd levels can be jarring and take one out of the scene, where they are no longer focused on the action but rather on the spectacle of what Oda is drawing.

Normally, when we see a gag, we understand that it's a moment outside of the story's narrative or seriousness. It's Oda being over the top, trying to make us laugh. It's deliberate, and it's easy to see his hand at play. But the gag is separate from the dramatic action, meaning the story can return to being immersive once the joke is over.

And that's where Gear 5's weakness comes into play. It blurs the line between the gag and the serious action. Instead of a gag interrupting a serious scene, the serious fight itself is being expressed through the language of a gag. When the reader should be immersed in the fight, they instead become focused on the spectacle of Luffy's cartoonish movements and the absurd things Oda is drawing. Rather than being absorbed in the scene, you're reminded that you're watching Oda draw something, creating a break in immersion. The main issue is that this is intentional. Gear 5 is meant to be exactly that from a thematic lens. But its greatest strength and thematic virtue is also its greatest dramatic weakness. Reconciling the two may be impossible. Because Gear 5 is the purest expression of what and who Luffy is, what he represents. Unfortunately, it's hard to connect with, especially for hundreds of chapters.

I like Gear 5, it seems fine except for Luffy’s over the top identity change. I think he loses character depth when he goes Gear 5. Maybe that’s the thing he has to overcome, the devil fruit dictating a bit too much.

If Luffy says he feels the most free in this form, the. That’s a problem. Shouldn’t he always feel that way? It’s a change no doubt.

The fighting style is fun and would be even more so if it uses the essence of One Piece more. Silly situations that are serious. Imagining a prolonged fight with Luffy’s antics but he’s locked in and the tone is serious and deadly with stakes. He wasn’t so serious with Imu
