General & Others The (non-existing) stakes in One Piece

#21
What stakes are we expecting in a shonen manga where the journey is pretty clear the MC wont be dying or anything of that sort until he's the Pirate King.

Naruto - Nothing happened to the MCs crew
Bleach - nothing happened to the MCs crew
Black Clover - same shit
DBZ- same shit
Fairy tale - same shit
Hell... Berserk - same shit.

I didnt feel any stakes during Water 7 - Ennis Lobby.

But technically speaking if luffy gets himself killed, its pretty much gg for the entire world. So in that regard theres always stakes on the line.
In nardo at least
Shikamarus teacher
Itachi
Jiraya

- blud was irrelevant for 99% of the manga, insert Yasu getting crucified.
- Itachi a villain
- Ace equivelent, though Ray will likely die too eventually so that might be more appropriate we'll see.
- Flashback deaths, insert the hundreds of OP characters who died in flashbacks
- Whitebeard equivalent

If including "fodder deaths" then OP is also just ahead by a landslide between Alabasta & Marineford.

But ya even ya had to list side characters, none of the Konoha youngins, no MC, no MC crew.

Truth is it's hard to establish tension in fictions when you are already strongly established and not upcoming underdogs anymore.

Oda and the other writes tried to increase the stake by making enemies even more powerful and making MCs perpetual underdogs. This is overused in fictions nowadays

Even when plenty of side characters died in Wano people still felt lack of tension, mainly because readers know the establised power level and don't have emotional investment in side characters

None really cares if Gerd dies or not and we all know imu can easily kill Gerd.

What people really asking is killing or crippling a character that readers are emotionally invested, like the straw hats.

But people need to know this is often author's last resort or biggest trump card to maximize stake, usually reserved at the very end of the series like for example iron man at endgame.

We are still like 3 arc's away from ending and Oda simply couldn't afford killing any of straw hats yet, if he ever wanted to.

You can say this was dumb and I'd agree, but that wouldn't make the likely outcomes of the HK fights any better.

In particular, I think establishing that Killingham must be defeated through death at the hands of a conqueror, then giving him to the guy who kicks and hasn't unlocked the Haki prior, will not turn out well

True. Even if in Wano we had some death like Ashura Doji and Izou, still was probably too little, and Kiku got her arm back like it was nothing etc.

Now we know that Chopper will probably give Gaban his arm back, and already gave Gerd her fingers back.

There are no consequences in this manga,at least until the final battle

True,as a writer you can only lose..Imagine the outrage of the Fans if one of the mc died:
„We waited so Long for them To achieve their goal and you let them die!!!!

I will start with a quote from myself:

Pre-skip we had at least some kind of stakes, where people where on their seats during Enies Lobby and later on during Marineford.

But post-skip has been one gigantic fuck-up from Oda.

This is the New World, where the stakes should be at their very highest, which Oda himself confirmed so many times.

Yet ironically enough he writes in LESS major consequences than ever before.

Nobody feels any kind of thrill (where you actually fear for your favorite characters) whatsoever, not even with the Demon King of the world being present.

Everyone knows that Oda won't write in major consequences and this is getting so bad currently, that Oda risks turning this into a certified clown show that not even the hardest homers can defend, if Elbaf really ends without any major consequences, too.
Imagine the feeling of Sabaody. That ain't happened ever again.

Consequences are not only about death: they are about permanent scars or amputation, they are about personalities evolving, they are about world building evolving.
But things rarely change in the One Piece world
Yes, even if no one dies, the character development is always welcome. Did Usopp die in Denies Lobby/W7 arc? Nope. Did he evolve? Yes. Although by now, that character development is buried under running gags.
