General & Others Why is Skypiea arc so underrated?

I've come across this multiple times, that many people dislike Skypiea to the point of even skipping it.
Many deem it irrelevant even tho the arc's relevance can actually obviously be seen.

  • The winged people are introduced, as well as a completely new living space for people above the clouds, of which most people in the blue seas don't know.
  • The events of the Void Century are teased as well as the events 400 years ago.
  • Observation haki and its insane power was properly introduced for the first time.
  • Roger's message in the end and the relevance of the poneglyphs to the main story.

And so on and on.
So, why do people deem this arc irrelevant?

The most salient aspect of that arc which people usually fail to grasp is how Skypiea is potentially a microcosm of the entire story itself.

While it isn't irrelevant, it is quite disconnected from the short-term plot and has some significant problems by itself, mainly regarding its forgettable group of villains, the focus on mantra (which I find to be repetitive at the end) and the excessive length in proportion to what is really told. It indeed includes some very interesting stuff; see the flashback, the themes of dreams, fantasy, etc., the visuals to a certain extent (a bit wasted, in my opinion, specially since I love precolumbian aesthetics)... and even the future impact on the big picture of the story. But I still remember it to be a little bit lacking, although maybe I should reread it.

ngl but I myself had unintentionally skipped it. My friend who got me into OP forgot to give me Skypiea arc episodes from start to finish. From the end of Alabasta, I was straight to falling off the Sky into the Marine base. I didn't even noticed much difference and just thought there were few fillers inbetween. But after catching up with the story on both Anime and Manga, I went back to check on what I had missed...
Skypiea has the most wholesome story telling of all. The friendship between Noland and Kalgara, the promise that was fulfilled after centuries. I've seen theories about how Skypiea is the OP in short summary.
It is a great arc and my one of my personal favorite and if anyone says otherwise, they should just drop OP.

Imagine your friend gave you Jaya instead of skipping that whole saga, then you see the knock up stream sending the crew to the sky only for them to fall back, and ultimately think: "Dude, so Bellamy was right, there's no sky island...!".

Quite simple: It doesn't have a great or really memorable fight. That's what most shonen readers look for. Enel vs Luffy is more of a gimmick battle, than an actual fight.

I for one agree with you btw, Jaya/Skypiea is one of the very best OP sagas.
