Character Discussion What is your opinion on the gags troupe from SHP?

Do you think it's saturated? Or do you see oda still being creative in its gag delivery?
The series already running for a long time so i understand if some gags are overused.

Luffy: so-so jokes
Zoro: the gag about getting lost gets old after a while, and oda made zoro way too serious after timeskip. He has more funny scenes in pre timeskip

Nami: so-so jokes
Usopp: same cowardice jokes, but it's still funny i guess because he has different commentaries
Sanji: hit or miss jokes. The nosebleed over seeing a girl is quite funny, but some are just...

..plain disturbing. For god sake, the last arc is about him getting fooled and laughed at by his bride.

Chopper: so-so jokes
Robin: so-so jokes
Franky: fresh and great gag scenes.
Brook: his "already dead" and "panty" gags are the definition of beating dead horse, well except maybe for this one scene

Except Sanji and Usopp the rest of the crew's gags aren't really that important or faded out of relevance tbh

Don't think oda will ever stop with Sanji and Usopp tho that's just his type of humor and he feels like comedy is an important part of One Piece

As much as I love Sanji's character I can't stand his gags. Maybe it's because I don't understand Japanese readers humor but it's too much for me.
You could say that this is a shonen series targeted at the younger audience. Mind you most of the readers are 18yo or older and it was proven.

I also don't like Luffy's stupidity gags. I understand ok. Dumb Shonen protagonist HAHAHA funny my stomach hurts.....

I feel bad for people who read this more than me.

I know it's about the tolerance level for shit like this but I think everyone who reads this series for more than 5 years should be at least disgusted with Oda's humor at times.

Zoro getting lost joke is also not funny anymore.

When he got lost and found Luffy ( talking about Apoo moment ) I was like. Oh, it's going to be Zo.. yes it's Zoro HA HA HA.....

Sanji’s shtick was really fucking tired by the end of his first arc, and has only gotten progressively less funny from there as the series has continued. Never thought Zoro’s main gag was that humorous, either. Don’t really mind anyone else’s, but those two haven’t been entertaining in a long time, if ever.

I don’t mind the gags. They add actual characters to the archetype. And most of them have actually been explained in the world as to why they’re the way they are

Luffy - If he wasn’t an idiot all the time he wouldn’t be Luffy.

Zoro - Zoros gag about getting lost is the only thing that makes him more than that generic “Badass” stereotype that’s been overused by every manga series.

Nami - Her greediness is ingrained in her character from her childhood of poverty and loss due to lack of money.

Usopp - If Usopp wasn’t cowardly he’d lose what it is that’s so special about him. His humanity. LSZ are monsters, Usopps cowardly humanity is a great juxtaposition.

Sanji - like it or not, every anime needs a pervert. Sanji is no where’s near as bad as master Roshi or Jaraiya, and his perversion is explained by his growing up in an all male environment. Plus it is very fun to see it compared to his chivalrous side as well.

Chopper - Sure I’m not the biggest fan of chopper, his gag of incredible Naivety and childishness makes me forget he’s supposed to be 17 and I keep thinking he’s 10 but it’s refreshing at times.

Robin - Best Gag in the series. Her internal adorable thoughts compared to how dark she says things never gets old.

Franky - Franky I don’t really get his gag. So no comment

Brook - Masking pain with humor is what I love about brook. His skull and dead jokes are actually super dark because he sometimes forgets he is a skeleton as well. His panty gag is funny at times or badass with BM. But it also leads to good divergent humor like when he met camie and asked for money instead because mermaids don’t wear panties.

All in all, yeah the gag can get old, but it’s who the characters are. To me getting annoyed and wishing the gags of a character would end would be like wishing Zoro would stop using three swords or wishing Sanji would stop cooking.

I agree with the majority. Sanji's gags are way too over the top; it's just disgusting at this point.

The ladies man/perversion of pre timeskip Sanji while was still a bit grim, was actually funny.

Zoro getting lost 24/7 is also getting boderline ridiculous. How do you get lost, riding on top of dog? Honestly makes no sense at this point.

Other long running gags just feel stale to me atm

running gags are running gags because they keep occurring.

Luffy will not stop being an idiot
Zoro will not stop getting lost
Sanji will not stop being a perv
Usopp will not stop being a coward
Nami will not stop being a bully
Robin will not stop being gloomy
Franky will not stop being super
Brook will not stop being a dead perv
Chopper will not stop being naive

if a joke stops being funny to me I simply ignore it. read over it and move on instead of actively trying to find problems.
no used getting worked up over it. its not going to go away.

some times they are funny but most of time it’s a waste of panels

they were funny at first but when the series is 900+ chapters it isn’t really funny anymore

i hate sanji’s gag tho most oda just keeps milking it, it’s overused af and it’s getting worse over time

Overall one-piece gags are not good anymore. Oda could not keep the gag level for the series. I have read another series where they use the same gag with certain characters but the way it is written it still made me laugh(its 100+ chapter manga), I think it handled gags/serious situations well.
And have to point this out, Sanji gags are disgusting at this point to me. So much that I try to avoid Sanji panels to save myself from potentially running into them.

They are overused
Sanji's nosebleed and Zoro getting lost especially
But Usupp's is the worst because it hurts his character
Every time he gathers courage and gets one step closer to his goal he has to take two steps back because him sweating out of fear is really funny for Oda
And well Brook was never funny for me
I can't stand his skull jokes :whitepress:

I shit you not i have read reports from multiple people on different sites claiming they have dropped the series because of Sanji's overplayed perversion.
I too was going to the one of them. But I developed a power which makes all Sanji panels disappear when reading.

Zoro's gag can be great if used correctly but not when they are used with the story or plot. you know just showing it in the background like in EL I remember he goes through one stair but comes out of a completely different one, it did not affect the plot nor it was important since everyone came to the same place but Zoro's route was different. There was also like the one on the cover page where we had a duck and its chicks and one was going in the wrong direction. I think using it mildly like this makes even repeated gags a good gag. But sadly, we don't have that. It just feels stupid and waste of panels
