Oda isn't particulary fond of killing characters off, not even during a war. It's telling that during MF war Ace and Whitebeard were the only named characters whose death were sure. None of the other leaders of the Whitebeard Pirates or their allies were killed (with the possible exception of Little Oars Jr and yet it's still far from sure) while no important marine character died.

And with Ace Oda literally Changed Sabo's design to resemble Ace and gave him Ace's Fruit all to "make it up" for Ace's fangirls
