Honestly I don't even need backgrounds. It'd distract me from the amazingly drawn characters who deserve to shine.
That's why perspective is important. By perspective I mean the drawing itself. Even in Bersek, the author makes sure his characters are the biggest on the page and closest to the reader's eyes to bring emphasis to them. When he wants more attention to the environment, just draw the characters smaller.
