Getting pierced through your chest is soothing?
Even if he didn't had the plans to surrender, he would've died anyway due to his illness and from what we've seen, it was quite painful.
So, either way he would've faced the same.

They were pirates, they lived their lives filled with fighting.
Peaceful deaths on a bed surrounded by loved ones would be out of character. And we know how much Oda likes his stereotype.
They still had good deaths. WB was surrounded by his family of choice.
Oden died surrounded by his best friends while protecting them.
Roger chose to give meaning to his death by inspiring the new generation. Out of the three his death was the least painful one. A swift beheading basically doesn't hurt.
