I personally think that the whole "open eye" power sounds cliché as hell and completely unattractive for a manga like One Piece.

Same, it'll really be stupid if it's something like that.

But it's suspicious that he didn't even get asked about it??? Your friend appears like that and you ask nothing?
I hope we'll get a flashback of how he got it. I fancy seeing Mihawk hurting him during training or something ahahah. But knowing Oda, there just may never be an answer.

Imo near the end of his training he dueled mihawk once again, for real. To see how much he has improved during the 2 years training and in general, since his fight with mihawk in the east blue.
Guess what, zoro lost the duel and his eye 🤷‍♂️
But he sure gave mihawk a relative rough fight.
I am sure we will see it in a flashback (at least part of it).

Zoro's scar isn't actually a scar.. it's just a mini-katana he uses in case of emergencies.. he just puts it on his left eye coz he feels like it.. and the reason he closes it is coz he's just sleepy.

To me it's gone. I don't think there's any big deal behind it. I mean he had several fights now and never opened it. And keeping it closed just for the jokes of it doesn't make sense to me. Especially when there were many surprising or shocking moments where he still kept it close. Any normal person would have opened it by mistake by then.

It's just a design like those of the others. There were so many sketches and ideas Oda had for them on how to look like after the timeskip. He just took what he thought was coolest. That's all. And a scar over the eye is a classic scar to make a character look cooler.

His eye is gone. As it can be seen from the concept designs of SH appearance post-ts,Oda wanted to add a permanent scar to Zoro .

It's there to showcase his fierce and rigorous training.
