Well for Eminem it was largely a "this is a black man's industry, he's just pretending to be black and got no place in it" but he won his doubters over with quality lyrics and being unfuckwithable
You are right. But it is not about being unfuckwithable. It is about calling out white rappers. Closing the door on them. Not including them in GOAT discussions and so on.
Drake can't even survive independent, there's a reason he was complicit with their tactics and signing these lifelong deals with Lucien Grainge. Kendrick went independent a couple years ago, while Drake still relies on his masters. He bit off more than he could chew though, they realized his asking price was too high and backed the winning horse in Kendrick.
I know that very well. I have heard labels can boost streams up to 50%. I always wondered how recent albums of Drake, which were low tier and mid at best, were getting so many streams.
I cant name a Drake song from last 5 years, except the one with J Cole and Travis Scott.
Like Dot said, I like Drake with melodies, I dont like when he act tough.
Drake had some of the best hooks in early days of his career. I have seen edits of people comparing him to Nate Dogg.
I like what happened to Drake, but not the narrative that hip hop is exclusive to blacks.
