In Shippuden:
He was revealed to be severely ill
His MS could lead to blindness, there was no way for him to actually get the last stage of sharingan
He wasn't wiping out clans to test his strength
He didn't even beat any of the notable Uchiha in an actual fight: Shisui/Fugaku
He collected a special blade to deal with Orochimaru

So when did the Jiraiya retcon even happen? Was Kishi retconning the story by making even Pain saying he got lucky Jiraiya couldn't figure out his secret?

To stay undercover, you have to be willing to even kill your own side, so no, being undercover alone doesn't explain why Itachi admitted Jiraiya was above him.

according to Kisame, they pale in comparison to Jiraiya. This is despite Itachi negging Orochimaru. Why? Simple, because beating an opponent with Genjutsu, doesn't inherently make you stronger. In fact, Itachi needed a special blade to seal Orochimaru away, and even that wasn't enough to get rid of him.

And is Itachis portrayal better? Kakashi had a heart attack in Orochimarus presence, and yet he had no problem fighting Itachi in the next arc.
