But having him be a laughing psychopath who commits horrific crimes while acting like a standard shonen good guy is a pretty interesting concept.

I was blind for a long time on this topic, believing that Luffy never kills anyone, he just crushes their wills. But, when I rewatched some scenes / panels where he literally sunk random marine ships all over the place, it made me wonder if he caused some casualties along the way.
