This seemed very clearly telegraphed to be about someone we - the audience - already knew, i.e. Roger.
Roger and Shanks' past with him was of course discussed almost immediately after.
Whatever level you think Shanks is, I don't think it can be taken for granted Garling is even all that close. He may very well be, but I think we can pump the brakes on who can scar Whitebeard and who Oda would go out of his way to foreshadow 652 chapters prior to their debut.

When it was revealed that even Sword was an official division of the marines then it was clear that everything the marines do is an order from the Fleet admiral… There is no faction of marines that gets orders from someone besides the fleet admiral

Whitebeard has no scar on his last meet with Roger
I almost forgot - i don't know if anyone mentioned this but - we get a chapter revealing Rocks, and the title of that chapter is "Unable to die" - i know that's pure madness but there's a chance.
Everything we know about Teach and Rocks = death of Rocks is SUS.
Let's put it this way - until the manga shows me that Rocks actually died - i won't believe it.
