It definitely did increase its popularity. The characters and story say what you will but people were tuned in more to One Piece than ever and here we are. The anime did do justice. Criticism of the arc itself is valid but the source material is what they animated and characters right? If it brought the hype it did so effectively.
this forum tends to forget its opinions are not the general fanbase by a long shot.
Despite the critics, Wano arc was the most hyped OP arc in Internet and in the period where the series got stronger in Western. OP Youtubers got millions of views during Wano arc. Anime watchers and mainstream started to pay more attention in OP during Wano.
The biggest influx of tourist and dumb takes are definitly from Toeis anime adaoption that is made for toei scholars and dbs refugees, so its true for the anime without a doubt
When it comes to the manga i dont think it spiked that much popularity, not that can i remember anway
also backed by data:
Just because the usual suspects who clap with their feet when aura farming man is on the page doesnt translate into "elevating"
Lmfao Wano or its writing didn't elevate shit. Tik tok edits with the new animation team is what made it big, could be any arc it wouldn't make a difference. That's when toei started taking the anime seriously.
Put enough phonk edits out there and you can practically make anything become super popular.
A handful of fan arts mixed in with some lines of Bonus DVD dialogue set to a bass boosted remix of Guiding Light from Roblox DOORS has gotten more people invested in and hyped for Gamma Jack, an already dead 1 second screen time background lore character from a 20 year old film, than there was hype for The Incredibles 2 after its release.

I feel like that data could be a little inaccurate. If only because it's only tracking physical print sales. You'll notice it's going down pretty consistently since Fishman Island, around 2012. And that's around the time digital manga sales really started taking off. This might not be the best indication of how many people were interested in the story, since a lot of the audience may have just moved to reading the story online. Officially, I mean.
It'd be interesting to see what the digital readers were in the same time period. But, I'm not sure if anyone ever publicly shared that data.
Wano failing to deliver is the reason this forum is at its lowest point today. The manga sales and the post wano drop in activity kinda reflect how Wano itself failed to actually capitalize on the hype it brought.
If Wano was actually successful, we would get the Marineford effect. When manga sales saw a significant increase setting up future arcs for big sales (fishman island wasn't even a hype arc but Marineford set up the hype and success of following arcs, Wano did the opposite). During the wano years One Piece was getting beat by multiple other series in sales, something I don't remember happening in decades, atleast not consistently.

Other series outselling One Piece does not have to mean One Piece lost popularity, it could mean that those series were way more popular relative to the series going on around Marineford, which as far as I know is true, since Demon Slayer sales were an anomaly
Like I don't know what series were going on around Marineford but let's just say there was Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach
Say that during that time,
One Piece sold an 8
Naruto a 6
Bleach a 7
Well, during Wano,
One Piece sold an 8
Demon Slayer sold a 20
And other popular series sold an 11 or 12 or something
Other series outselling One Piece does not mean One Piece declined, when the sales statistics of those other series are an explosion and an anomaly, it just means those other series are way more popular than the "other series" were during the time of Marineford
For example, Demon Slayer sold over 220 million copies, with only 23 volumes, over a period of 9 years, while running for only 4 years, with a pandemic and a very high quality and popular anime happening at the time when the manga was ending
That makes Demon Slayer an anomaly
Anyway, Wano was definetly peak and I don't remember how many times I cried over it
If One Piece was a 10 before Wano, after Wano it's a 1000

Except the OP sales on their own didn't see any significant improvement. They were steadily seeing a decrease overall and I don't think Wano did anything to stop this trend.
The reason I brought other series up is we can compare it to the field to get better context, since overall manga sales may have taken a hit in the industry. But that wasn't necessarily the case when you compare it to competitors.

Remember the Blackbeard will come to get Kaido's fruit theories?
When Shanks showed up and said he thought Blackbeard would show up, it was insane

I think honestly, part of the reason I don't appreciate Marineford is that Wano was so much better, way more hype, the battles were way better, the story was a lot bigger
Wano has a lot of problem...like a lot both in short term(i.e. in arc issues) and long term(for whole series).
And the next arcs and info given keeps making wano even more shit.
I mean it had good setup(dressrosa did ruin it initially too a bit with how dofamingo's became) like with Kinemon/Zou and Kaido's Reputation before Wano.......
Then oda messed up everything...
Oda could've been limited to what he could include in his manga at the time, but now that he's starting the Final saga he's allowed to include the juicy stuff.
