No it's not. Death is not a necessity to feel empathy for a character who is losing their agency. Xebec is confused
The impact here is delivered properly. We feel, not because he lost someone, but because of everything else.

All of this at the same time. So of course he is crying.
I'd prefer it if they didn't immediately get separated and Eris gave him info about Xebec's plan, but then Eris died sometimes later and Teach went on his solo mission.
I was actually surprised that Eris survived, was expecting the generic route of Xebec killing her, but then somehow stopping himself from killing Teach.
I don’t even know whether Teach would know who his father was if his mother wasn't there to tell him.
A lot of the knowledge base for his plan might've come from what she told him about Xebec's own plan.
