Not necessarily, there are choices, quests and conditions to get certain endings but if you just get to the final boss without meeting any of them you get a standard Elden Lord ending.

Did you forget to get torrent in the first attempt?

Cause I could see how one could get fed up with the big map with no torrent. With torrent tho, traversal becomes way faster.

Also, maybe look up a guide or something lol. Just for the main question at least

I remember the storm castle
Some huge swamp
A massive cave that looked like that one skyrim dwarven city with the jellys
Last I got lost was some huge castle at the end of a long ass bridge

Slowing down and actually delving into the world rather than just sprinting past everything on horseback is how Elden Ring is meant to be experienced

Take your time there. By far the best legacy dungeon in the game and maybe in all souls games.

Either way, storm castle, and then one of those two castles, and you're set to go for mid game
