OK, part of this analysis I saw on Reddit, but I have my own ideas. I don't think that Imu is using someone else's body, but I believe Imu is Joy Boy. Just look at this:
Imu has the Straw Hat, it's not giant, but it suits his size. More to that, he keeps it in his special room
The cape symbol is Emeth's face with a bone cross
He wears pirate clothes and a similar belt.
Also, Nika has Spear, the same Spear that Imu is using.
Nika is known as Savior and God of Destruction. Why? Because Joy Boy from Savior became Evil Ruler.
He lost a battle not to someone else, but to grief, and became the opposite of what he represented. Oppression instead of liberation. It's not an uncommon trope for the liberator to slowly turn into the oppressor as they try to protect the freedom they initially won. And if Joyboy somehow became immortal in the process of liberating the world, he would have ample time to become the "bad guy".
And Haki worked on Imu, because ot reminded him of the other self.
In the D. Gray Man manga, Mana, who fought against the Earl, was actually the Earl. Joy Boy could lose himself in his Grief when he became Sad Boy. He hated himself so much that he started to believe that Joy Boy was another person.
This wouldn't be the first time in One Piece that characters suffer from psychological problems: Big Mom and Karamel, who forgot that she killed her mother, Doflamingo, who suffered a lot from nightmares of his past, and much more.
Also, this is really interesting, that Imu wants Vivi, and Vivi was the first princess that Luffy helped. She even became a member of the Straw Hat pirates.
It would be a nice contrast if Luffy, who is basically new Joyboy, doesn't go the same path when his journey is completed, and instead of becoming king of the world, just keeps on sailing.
