To start, these guys think they’re the only -Americans- on the continent. They use the word "american" as a synonym for "U.S. citizen." I’d love to see how they’d react if they found out that Mexicans, Brazilians, Uruguayans, Chileans, and everyone else are equally american too.
I understand the concept and sympathize with the sentiment. I just use the term for simplicity’s sake.

We are called that because America is in our name. Example, The United States of Mexico's citizens are called mexicans.

And the continent's name is The Americas, not America lol

I mean, it's really not that deep tbh. The country is called "United States of America." How else would you refer to yourself? A Statesian lol? It's just convention
