WTF? Here in Brazil and Paraguay, they teach it as "America". I had no idea that, officially, the ISO agreement calls it "The Americas." That’s bizarre. Yeah, they technically are. But they are joined by land and it’s a territorial concept. I would understand why Brazilians who see themselves as American due to that detail, would be bothered by people in the US trying to monopolize the identity.
