Speculations Are Joyboy and Imu's names actually Usernames?

This is a weird thought I randomly had, and I might as well share it.

But, we know that the Ancient Kingdom was a highly advanced society. Tons of super-advanced tech all over the place. Far surpassing what we saw on Egghead that Vegapunk was able to recreate.

So, in theory, they would also have something similar to all the technology we have today. Video calls. Forums. Video games. More advanced, but similar ideas.

So, is it possible that Joyboy and Imu's names aren't their real names at all? But, actually their online aliases? The name they use in whatever social media platform or MMO they first communicated with each other in? Fake names that they eventually turned into their real names, as they began to use those more than their real ones?

I don't know. It just strikes me that "Joyboy" and "Imu" are both really unusual names. But, it WOULD make some sense if these were the names they were using in some virtual world that used to exist during the Void Century. Names of their online avatars they used to use, that they eventually turned into reality. If we assume that Devil Fruits ARE just some form of advanced technology, they could have been used to turn a virtual world into a real one. Or to alter the real world to be more like a virtual world. One way or another.

I guess we might just be lucky Joyboy didn't call himself "BananaHammock69" or something.

I could be wrong. But, I'm just going to put the idea out there.

Yes it's mostly likely nickname like Straw Hat


Although Imu already got intro box with the name IMU.


Imu also talking in third person using that name.



Have you seen anyone using their surname to talk in third person?

Have you anyone using their internet surname to talk in third person?

I don't think Oda is capable bringing social media like advancement in the story. Too much headache

I mean...if Imu was originally a REALLY hardcore roleplayer who refused to ever break character "in-game", I could see that tracking. And we've seen some glimpses of that, with Imu having some slips when he usually talks super formally. There's a lot of minor hints that Imu is kind of projecting a front of a sort. Imu seems to be presenting some level of a "fake face" to the outside world, to maintain his power and authority.




Also, here's a slight addition to the idea that I just thought up.

If this is the case, then it's not impossible that Oda's had some idea of working in some sort of "virtual world" into the story from the very beginning. The internet wasn't really what it is now, back when One Piece started in 1997. So, some changes to whatever plan Oda originally had have probably happened over the decades. But, that doesn't mean there weren't a few stories about "computer worlds" even before then.

And one of the more notable examples I can think of is actually the original Megami Tensei, aka Digital Devil Story. Before they even added the "Shin".

If you didn't know, the video games are actually based on a old Japanese series of novels from 1986. Oda was born in 1975, so he would have been 11 years old when these novels first started coming out. That's basically the perfect age for a little boy who's into mythology and horror. So, it's not impossible that Oda read those books as a child.

So, we have a story about computers and technology being used to unleash "Devils" into the world. Which....kind of sounds like what might have happened with Devil Fruits in the One Piece World. And Lucifer ends up ruling the world after a cataclysm, which actually sounds pretty similar to what happened with Imu.

I just have to wonder if Oda was partially inspired by Megami Tensei when creating this world? I could kind of see it. I don't think he's ever mentioned enjoying the franchise. But, he might have avoided ever mentioning it because it would be kind of a big spoiler if he ever did.

But, that all depends on if this is even what Oda's going for. We'll see. But, if there was a "Virtual World" back during the Void Century, and something that Joyboy and Imu did unwittingly unleashed Devil Fruits onto the World...I could see there being a case for Oda taking some inspiration from the Megami Tensei franchise. Maybe. We'll see. Something to keep a eye on, at least.

The first few panels reminded me of Fullmetal Alchemist, the dwarf in the flask's emergence from the black void goo or whatever. Doesn't "Mu" mean "void", among other things? Would also mean the sword he used to stab Luffy can be called "Mu-sword".

It's either a classic 'simulation theory' or something like it that involves an "original world" that all the characters came from. Maybe something like Heaven/Eden which ends up being a higher plane of existence or "5th dimensional" etc and is actually more 'unreal' and (benevolently) cartoonish than what we see now.

The "real world" where the story takes place now is then basically a penal colony of sorts where the fallen are sent to, and cut off from God's presence (or whatever fictional equivalent there may be). We know souls exist; if they're immortal, that doesn't mean their memory capacity is infinite. Everyone could have simply forgotten who they are, thus their names change every thousand years or so for the humans (soul's name not their birth name) and maybe every 10s of billions for the demons if at all lol. Unless someone comes from 'outside' and reminds them, they would probably fight over everything literally forever and never really figure shit out.

Given this seems to be set before The Great Flood, with demons trying to do their own knockoff floods and failing to stop humans from simply reincarnating on the other side of them, I'm guessing Imu isn't even Lucifer. Probably Azazel or something by the looks of it lol. Given their whole thing is deception, it really could be anyone. I'd be surprised if that's the actual final villain even with BB as the new vessel.
