I think the explanation will be that subsconciously Imu is lonely and wants a challenge similar to the ones he had in the void century. This why he smiles when he sees Loki's nidhogg form and when he sees Ragnir. This why Usopp's words got him so heated because he actually does want to struggle but he also wants to be seen as a transcendent unknowable god.
