Character Discussion Are One Piece fights kind of stupid and nonsensical?

#1
Just look at how Luffy dealt with Imu's exploding bats the first time he used them:

JET GATLING!!

Same situation again, so why didn't he use JET GATLING again?!

And then, in the "serious" round we're having now, he suddenly remembers to use it again:

Honestly, I thought the way Luffy "lost" his first fight against Imu was really stupid.

In the immortal words of Mike Tyson, everyone's got a plan until they're punched in the mouth.

But more seriously, the law of shonen is a bitch. Why don't villains transform into their strongest state and use their ultimate attacks right away? The same way why The Rock or Steve Austin don't start a match off with the Rock Bottom or the Stunner. You just gotta do it that way. Even if it really is silly.

No you are reading it wrongly in the first time he used jet Gattling fires was far but after that Imu attacked him and made him off balance, then homing fires become so close so Luffy had no choice but to escape which made him loose the sight of Imu and get stabbed. In the second time Luffy used a different attack which had a wider attack range so he didn't escape to dodge, jet gattling is good to deal with homies but if they attack from all sides it becomes a weakness while dawn gattling can cover the sides too.

Don't blame the series if your comprehension ability is poor. :kayneshrug:

Yeah, I'm the stupid one.

It worked, bro. He neutralized the attack by blowing up the bombs, which is exactly why he used the same technique AGAIN in this chapter.
Better than taking a direct hit right?

I might agree that these fights can be nonsensical. In fact, I think I said something very similar recently. It's bullshit. People win and lose with absurd elements involved regularly.

He used a powered up Gatling while Loki was running offense and still got the worst of it due to the shield.
I didn't mention the shield any other time. The point here is to show that the exploding bombs are neutralized by a Gatling. Forget the shield.

EVERY time Imu uses those exploding bats, Luffy just needs to use the Gatling and that's it. It's over. That works to neutralize the attack.

My question is why Luffy doesn't just pick up the ground itself and slam it into them

Why throw his fists when he can do crap like that?

He made it look awfully easy to stop a Bolo Breath from Kaido

Or grab a damn tree turn it into rubber and swing it at them? Idk, Luffy is stupid

He literally goes "omg I finally had an idea sink into my thick skull! 💡" and THEN he does something that actually makes sense but that's a rare moment for the guy

The point isn't to neutralize bombs, the point is hurting Imu. Luffy's on borrowed time and his helpers are severely wounded, in that sense he didn't meet his objective before Dawn Bullet

If someone attacks you, your objective isn't necessarily to damage your opponent right away, but to deal with their attack.

Imu attacked Luffy in their first fight with the bombs, and Luffy neutralized them with the Gatling. In other words, he figured out a way to deal with Imu's attack.

Luffy was attacked by the exact same attack again, and the intelligent thing to do would have been to neutralize it by using the Gatling again. But he didn't, because the IQ and the fights in this manga sometimes make absolutely no sense.

Then, the THIRD time he's ATTACKED by the exact same attack, he does exactly what he did the first time: he neutralizes the attack using a Gatling.

All this bullshit about hurting IMU comes later. Getting through the shield, damaging Imu, all of that is irrelevant to my example. If you're BEING ATTACKED, you need to DEAL WITH THE ATTACK before ANYTHING ELSE.

In this panel here, is Luffy trying to hurt Imu or deal with his attack?

... You are making my point for me. In a real fight, whether it's sport or in the streets, the most important thing by far is to SEE. If you don't SEE the right outcome, don't attack lol. Get space and look. If they're on the offense, look for what you need to start your own offense

Oda might get this because it's common sense. It's generalized in all sorts of ways, you'll hear about Messi's "vision" and stuff like that. In One Piece it's not unlike how he ran from Katakuri until it was time to engage. Luffy was launching attacks at Imu and not having an effect, and ran on the next volley.

You've completely lost the point of the argument. This conversation is already drifting away from the actual point.

Is your ego refusing to admit that you're wrong or something?

It's simple: it's the same attack being used twice, so I can use the same response against the same attack.

Kaido uses Thunder Bagua for the first time? I dodge.

Kaido uses Thunder Bagua for the second time? I dodge.

That's the obvious response to the same thing.

Imu uses exploding bombs: I use GATLING.

Imu uses exploding bombs again: I run away like an idiot instead of using GATLING AGAIN.

Imu uses exploding bombs again: Luffy uses GATLING AGAIN (THIS CHAPTER).

This is simply a way of showing that this attack doesn't work against me no matter how many times you try. All he has to do is use Gatling to neutralize the attack.

Stop talking this bullshit about "observing."
