This is very weird as there is no point except keeping these two engaged. Imu is the big bad and he is here to fight Luffy and Loki etc. Sanji vs KHam is to defeat Zaza so that the kids are not kidnapped. Sommers on the other hand is just waiting at the port for KHam to bring the kids.
But if Sanji defeats KHam (which he is supposed to do with the ACoC powerup) then there is no point of Sommers waiting. So what is the point of Sommers and Zoro fight? There is no direct link to a threat/time bomb here. Sommers is not going to the village to kidnap the kids, he is waiting for KHam to bring the kids. He is not actively threatening any allies. He is not a Pica level threat in DR.
Is the point of Sommers just to be defeated and explain how to defeat the HK and Gorosei.
Do you think there is more to this or just this? For a character that has so much of their personality shown it seems weird that Oda would just limit their role to be used for explaining how to defeat the HK.
In previous arcs the SHs were more like an invading rescue force but here they are the defensive force. While in EH they were defending to escape, here they are defending to stay.

Just like Lowanoa Loro's character, his fights too are insignificant!

I don't have a problem. The thrust of the arc was three HK are using their powers to steal kids. One HK was essentially subbed for Imu, who cannot be beaten one on one and at best can be held at bay by several of the strongest taking turns. Elbaf absolutely cannot stop the other two HK, if only because the don't have the secret ingredient needed for deterrence.

Sommers is not only in charge of the ship needed to take the kids but too powerful in combination with Killingham for any one person to beat. He's also a critical extension of Imu, whose death would cause serious physical and mental devastation to the point where Imu could possibly just leave due to that alone. Zoro doesn't really know that last part but we do, so those are our stakes

It's clear that Sommers and Killingham are underestimating Zoro and Sanji, let's not forget that Sommers swatted Zoro like a fly few chapters ago and Zoro was using ACoC. These fights will be tougher than ppl think, and they'll probably weaken Imu when defeated.

I'm also certain that Zoro will actually kill Sommers and that will be an insane moment.
