Players don't have ambitions to wear a jersey number lmao.

They have ambitions to play iconic positions on field for their nations and win the tournaments.

Messi's and Ronaldo's jersey numbers are too iconic. Return them is show of respect for their long services or atleast not giving it to anyone as long as they are playing.

In case of Sachin, it's different story. It had to be done.
The issue is these numbers are already iconic before them

How you define a superstar?

Modric won it in 2018, still in Messi-Ronaldo era.

The Croatia world cup run was massive PR (underdog appeal) , even though their performance at final was super embarrassing.

Ballon Dor got heavy popularity tax / Pr machine in none could beat Ronaldo/Messi, yet Modric still won it.
In the eyes of football experts and those who understand the sport, Modric is truly a great player and "superstar"

I meant that in the eyes of the general public and casuals he is just another "good" player. The same applies to Kroos, Xavi, Iniesta and many others.

Lots of casuals believe that Messi/Cristiano were the main reason why Barcelona/Madrid won all those titles.

Luís Pedro Sousa, the editor-in-chief of the Portuguese newspaper Record and the director of CM radio, owned by the Medialivre group, which is partially owned by Ronaldo, recently stated that Cristiano Ronaldo wants his Portugal teammates to treat him the way Argentina treats Lionel Messi. :suresure:

He went on to criticize JJ .

His PR in full Swing lmao

Can't wait for Piers Morgan 3.0
Sadly he isnt the Small argentine

Many people consider Modrić a great player—and rightly so; he won the Ballon d'Or during the latter stages of the Ronaldo era, a year when Messi also failed to win any major team trophies. But look at Iniesta: he competed against Ronaldo and Messi at their absolute peak in 2010. To me, he is undoubtedly an even greater legend.

Yes

if you mean a players that can pull a lot of casuals and Casuals who will sit down to watch a football match just to see one players play.

Then Modric is far off the list. Heck most casuals don't even know he exists.

But then who is really superstar today?

Mbappe, Haaland?

It occurred to me that even in deep rural third world with limited internet access knows who Messi and Ronaldo are but none really knows the current generation.

Then again Beckham was considered superstar, very popular ( his hairstyle larped by men all around the world ) and among women even though he was not that good.

Beckham was for his looks mainly and to some extent free kicks. He was a poster boi.

Messi and Ronaldo rivalry boosted by PR and social media / electronic media made them famous all over the World. They become cash cows for everyone to earn. More they got played, more revenue everyone was earning.

Haaland and Mbappe are good (yamal as well but I feel success is getting into his head and he won't last long) but they won't match the popularity Messi and Ronaldo had

When I watched Argentina's game last night, I was furious—mostly with Scaloni.
He should have called up Dybala and played both him and Nico Paz behind Messi and Álvarez.
The pain of that final still lingers with me.:josad:

One of the issues with Messi and Ronaldo is that their names are bigger than their teams; if you call them up, you cannot bench them.
I think Messi realized this sooner and decided to leave on his own.
Messi did get benched. Everyone gets benched when they are out of form or match flow dictates so

Messi got played more because he's a playmaker as well. He was the central piece of Scaloni's plan and entire team tactics. He was also self aware of his limitations and adjusted his play accordingly. He pushed his own teammates ahead as well. And, on top of these, Messi kept on finding ways to contribute to the team - assist, dribbles, accurate passes, possession, freekicks, corners, even scoring goals.

Ronaldo did everything opposite of this. He definitely tried to adjust his positions but he lost that touch and speed needed to finish. To make it worse, he's infamous for throwing tantrums, fighting for goals and positions he wants to play in. It's toxic ngl.

Guilty.
When i was a teenager i got highlights because of fuckin Beckham :suresure:
I used to go this barber shop when I was a kid and they got this Beckham poster pasted as sample, I asked the barber do to my hair just like him.

I went to school and the girls teased me "Hi Beckham". These are the real superstar tax that improve your life :goyea:

But then too many people tried to larp and it killed the vibe.
