Powers & Abilities Who would you consider a "Technique" type Swordsmen?

#5
I don't think you can split off "technique type" as seperate category, cause all of the swordsmen in the series that follow a certain style/school, are very skilled and use refined techniques.

If I'd have to guess which style is the actual best and the deepest in terms of skill it probably comes down to Mihawk's Itoryu, Oden's Nitoryu and Zoro's Santoryu, while I don't think Zoro's Ito- or Nitoryu is necessarily (much) worse than theirs.
Overall Zoro is probably the most skilled though, hence he will become the new WSS.
Then comes Mihawk, then Ryuma or Oden and then guys like Shanks, Ray, Denjiro, Vista..

I don't necessarily think, that Roger or Rocks for example are overly skilled tho. Their movements seem a little sloppy in comparison to the others, but it might be cause of a lack of feats.

@nik87 @ConquistadoR how would you rank all the common swordsmen in terms of raw skill? And how would you classify them (thinking about guys like Cracker, BM and Jack f.e.)
A 3 tier- system perhaps?

Strong Blade & Gentle Blade only apply to Pre-TS and majority of OPVerse cuz that's the extent of what They know,
You either apply your Strength or Speed on your Sword, They are main Two Sword Schools in One Piece World & Humans in general,
Some Characters can even have a different name for it, such as Kyros Destructive Blade & Cavendish Beautiful Blade,

But after that, we've learned that there are so many Powers you can apply your Sword to,
Swordsmanship can Scale with so many things, not just Strength & Speed,
We now have:

Strength Scaling Blade
Speed Scaling Blade
CoA Scaling Blade
CoC Scaling Blade
Maki Scaling Blade
Soul Scaling Blade
Freeze Scaling Blade
Fire Scaling Blade
Gravity Scaling Blade
Lightning/Electro Scaling Blade
... etc

As for Techniques, They are simply no different than Food Recipes, basically Moves that determine which Stats are gonna apply & how little & how much can be applied, so it's not like Zoro's Technique is superior than Tashigi's or Rayleigh got better Technique than T-Bone, it's just that their Stats are vastly different, as demonstrated by Zombie Ryuma against Zoro.

So there is no such thing as specializing in Technique, only your Stats matter & also deciding which Technique to use.

Technique is the most basic type of swordsmen, the children who enlisted into Shimotsuki dojo, the first thing they learn is technique.

Once they have that under their belt, they start bulking up by training their physique. Then comes haki.

Zoro who encountered Mihawk in East Blue, tried to win with technique+physique but Mihawk's haki created a huge gap between them.

We should look at it from EoS perspective, you have the right idea.
Zoro is the most skilled, ofc, so is by design.
At 2nd place I would put, Shiryu, due to my Orochified Raiu theory which creates 8-sword style. Without it, he drops down, under Mihawk, skill-wise.
3rd place I would give to Kakus Yontoryu, the only thing in this show that was superior to Santoryu, skill-wise.
4th place I would give to Oden and Gaban and Vista.
After that comes Ittoryu that many use and it is hard to say who is the most skilled, probably Mihawk.
I dont know if BM and Jack have any style/skill tbh, they just swing their weapons... BM can copy the Elbaf move...

Mihawk's technique and strength was also superior at that time imo. That moment where he blocked Zoro's attack right before its momentum, that was technique. He understood Zoro's technique and countered it with his own.
He didn't need haki to defeat Zoro back then.

What exactly do you mean by “skill”?
Defensive capabilities, range attacks, speedblitz moves, multiple cleave/cuts- or gatling moves, specific counter techniques -> in general a high variety of refined techniques.
Oda has a pattern of checking all those boxes with guys who have mastered a weapon martial art: Zoro, Oden, Kaido, Yamato..
And if they live by a certain traditional style they might even call out its name and have certain stances: Zoro & Oden f.e.

I think for example that Oden is likely more skilled than Roger, but Roger still rekts him. Probably the reason why Oden also says Oden Nitoryu is the strongest iirc.

Know what I mean?

Zoro skill and technique is never talked about it enough tbh. One of the reason he was so strong in the early days of east blue was because of his Ivy League trained skills and technique. Brutes of east blue could never compete with him. I don't even think his skills have evolved much from the 50 chapters of the manga. The only thing he has been improving on is his strength and power. Like against Mihawk he already had Sanzen sekai and to this day that is still on of his top peak level attack (like top 3) albeit with more power and strength to form Ichidai Sanzen Daisen Sekai
