Humility. That's why it's not cringe. Zoro is elevating himself to a status he doesn't truly hold. Is Zoro the actual crowned king of a place called Hell in the world of One Piece? Meanwhile, Sanji is placing himself alongside Zoro as someone who serves his captain, which is true. There is nothing inaccurate or self aggrandizing about Sanji saying he's his captain's shield. He's putting himself in a position of servitude alongside Zoro, not above him or anyone else.

Professing yourself to be the King of a realm that hasn't even been proven to exist in the world of One Piece, and that Zoro has never visited, if it does exist, is very self fellating. Alongside that, it fits the lore of Joyboy and the roles of Zoro and Sanji. People have called them Luffy's Sword and Shield long before this chapter.
