Why are the Numbers a collective of giants and what's their purpose?

The Numbers are giant mooks, basically the Beast Pirates version of the Giant Squad. They are very big and strong but too drunk or stupid or both to lead the other Beast Pirates into battle.

@Buusatan94 What becomes of the Headliners' former crew, which they keep?

The Beast Pirates' hierarchy is not that complicated : Kaido the General command the entire crew, after him the All-Stars/Calamities are the highest ranked of the Beast Pirates who second him, after them there are the Headliners that serve as officers of the Beast Pirates and command specific groups of Beast Pirates and they include either the strongest Gifters or more rarely former captains.

Either the Headliners' crews were killed in some cases they were pirate captains that defied Kaido before being broken into submission to him, or they joined the Beast Pirates as simple mooks (Waiters if they didn't eat Smiles).

Kaido's in charge. The Calamities are his most trusted, powerful crewmates. After them comes the TR, who would seem to be powerful former captains who he's taken into his crew. Then the Headliners, glorified grunts for the most part (equivalent to most of the Charlotte Children). The Numbers I think are allies, who are related to Kaido's life prior to being an emperor. Therefore not quite in the chain of command

But due to their nature as allies and old associates of Kaido will be treated with some deference by the majority of his crew
