Lets all be real, facial expressions are not the primary indicator but context matters because contextually Oden has not just permanently but also mentally scarred Kaido. Prior to this, even when Oden cut Kaido, the way Oda wrote that fight, Oden was talking shit to Kaido, telling him to get the fuck out of Wano and Kaido wasn't able to defend himself until somebody distracted.

Now I am not tryna disrespect Kaido with it, but give Oden his just due, he was portrayed as certified Yonko level character there and lets not try to dismiss his feat with "Hybrid Kaido was not there" "Kaido got stronger" etc.

The scabbards has a mini flashback about oden telling them about the samurai spirit and how to channel it through sunatch. They were carrying out his will and he manifested through it. Which is why kaido thought he saw him and was surprised for a moment, which allowed them all

I think that if oden was still alive and was allowed to grow then yes he would be at the level of current yonko/admirals/mihawk, sadly he wasn’t allowed to so I disagree with your assessment for now shishio. The man was fighting moriah 2 years prior to fighting oden, unless you wanna tell me moriah was way up there.
The flashback will shed some light on this and I will be ready to concede if he didn’t get stronger

I didn't interpret it that way and I don't think that was Oda's intention either. I think Oda is trying to convey the fact that Oden has put so much fear in Kaido that possibility of someone like Oden returning throws him off and makes him get blitzed by people far weaker than him

What’s the most feasible thing to you, that kaido who has never once shown to fear oden even after the battle and he scarred him but has shown supreme admiration and respect for his strength, would be surprised at seeing a foe like him suddenly popping out or that he would be scared?
