Why is it a stretch? This kind of things are always subjective. It eventually comes down to which character you like most. One Piece is one of the most popular manga ever and Zoro is top 2 most popular character of that series.

Zoro himself is just a shallow badass who’s best traits are plagiarized from other characters like Guts. Saying he is the best character even in Shonen is ridiculous, let alone all of manga. Manga characters who are more original and well written than Zoro include Guts, Saitama, Light, Lelouch, and Ouki just to name a brief few.

Zoros characters is rooted to his promise to his dead best friend..which is what drives him to become stronger..despite being hard on surface, he has a sense of kindness to the point where he nearly starves himself for a little girl..despite his lofty ambition, his Admiration for his captain and responsibility towards crew members made him sacrifice it all
