Her goal was to make Luffy listen to her.
Luffy's goal was to get past her.

She fulfilled her goal and Luffy did not, so she won their confrontation.

I’m not commenting on her strength or whatever. You can justify her 30 years of uselessness however you want but the fact remains that every other princess’s CV is a lot more substantive and at her age, Robin had lived through a helluva lot more and had infinitely more accomplishments to her name.

After that, she takes on Sasaki's Armoured Division and withstands an endless barrage of cannon fire while protecting Momonosuke and Shinobu. She wipes out the majority of the Division before Hatchan shows up.

In fact I have more respect for Rebecca for being born an ordinary girl who took to the arena to get revenge on Doffy than a 30 year old perpetual damsel who hasn’t even tried to do anything and justified it with ‘daddy won’t let me’. Bitch, you actually freed the kids with Ace when you got off your ass, dafuq you smoking bitch?
Cinera

Then in the very next chapter, she takes out Hatchan in a single attack.

That's a feat that was reserved for G4 Luffy, Drake and Franky's Radical Beam (lasers are pretty OP in One Piece).

From her introduction until now, Oda has consistently reinforced that Yamato is a formidable combatant.

In fact, Yamato is the only woman for which Oda has done this.
Cinera

Linlin gets clowned on by characters far weaker than her.
Smoothie is hilariously incompetent.
Hancock enslaves men to love.

She's strong, but her strength isn't properly displayed the way e.g. Doflamingo's has been.
Cinera
Cinera
Oda has given me no reason to believe that he would treat Yamato has anything other than a formidable combatant, and so far, she's the _only_ woman that has received that treatment from Oda.
Cinera
Cinera
I guess Ulti might count as well, though she's designated girl opponent (for Nami) and she's not as strong.

Okay, rant on why I was especially annoyed at the "undefeated female gladiator" comment over.
Cinera
Cinera
Next. Yamato is a Princess in a Tower with no sort of resume.

This is a legitimate criticism. She's had no accomplishments in her life at nearly 30, and this is not good.
Den_Den_Mushi

I think you missed the point of my criticisms bro. I don’t care how strong she is. She’s like Weevil to me. Unemployed for 30 years and useless while the rest of the female cast has been hustling and working they asses off to get what they want. I don’t respect STrOnK FeMoID ChArAcTeR I respect hustle, whatever it might be.
Cinera

I could _explain_ why Oda did this, but I don't want to defend it, because I actually think it's not good.

Two of the qualities I find most attractive in female characters are a strong internal locus of control and resolution/an iron will.

(I like these qualities in general I think, but well there are fewer female characters in contemporary Shounen that meet these criteria).
Cinera
Cinera
Yamato has the latter, but not has been pretty lacking in the former. In general, I think Fate and Destiny are way too prevalent in One Piece for an internal locus of control to shine much.

Roger basically gave up on the One Piece because he was too early.

Oden abandoned an opportunity to save Wano because he needed to guide Roger, etc.

I don’t need to be persuaded that Yamatrash is strong. I don’t give a crap about strong. Meme is strong. So what? She a lazy ass clown and Perospero and Katakuri be running the show on her behalf. There is NO excuse for her doing nothing for 30 years. She and Ace freed some kids when she actually stopped whining and rubbing one out to Oden’s diary. Do something dumbass bitch and kick the smut addiction fuck’s sake.
Cinera
Cinera
Fate seems to have a strong prevalence in the series.

Yamato waiting for the pirate that Oden prophesied will defeat Kaido is part of this absoluteness of fate/destiny.
Topi Jerami

Will be better if Oda introduced Yamato in act 1, as the Witching Hour Boy who take back what Beast Pirates stole from Wano, and returned it to Wano villagers. Something like that.

@Topi Jerami: Yamato is imprisoned on Onigashima, she couldn't have been the Witching Hour Boy.
Cinera
Cinera
@Den_Den_Mushi: there is literally nothing Yamato could have done.

Like she was literally imprisoned on the island, kept under near constant supervision and beaten up whenever she defied her father's orders.
Den_Den_Mushi

Agree with @Topi Jerami just make her do something... anything. Even Sanji tried to cook and feed animals against Judge’s will. Kid Sanji was trying hard to achieve his dreams even when he knew it was futile. Yamatrash hasn’t done shit to help anyone in 30 years and never would’ve if Ace hadn’t helped her.
