No, the explosion was going to kill Yamato. Oda told us through her that the explosion would kill her.

This has nothing to do with combat ability. If you want, justify them as anti Yamato bombs or whatever.

Oda decided that this explosion in particular would kill Yamato, so it would.
Cinera
Cinera
If the explosion wasn't going to kill her, she wouldn't have said so.
Cinera

Yamato is not unemployed by choice. She didn't do anything because she can't do anything. She didn't hustle because she couldn't hustle.

I do hold it against her. Chop your own limbs off if you have to. Get out of there if you really want it so bad. Other characters have done it and if she’s supposedly so strong, this shouldn’t be a problem. Even if she dies, that screws up Kaido’s plans to make her shogun. Win win. No excuses for this lazy trash bag.
Cinera
Cinera
She was a prisoner for 20 years, and the moment an opportunity for freedom and to actually make a difference appeared, she began her rebellion.
Cinera
Cinera
Yamato did not know that Kaido wanted to make her Shogun. None of the Beast Pirates knew either.
Cinera
Cinera
So you hate Yamato so much that you would rather she kill herself than wait for the time when she could actually make a difference?

Okay.

I do hold it against her for letting her agency be taken away for 20 years. There are ways out even from the most dire situations. Even self sabotage to stop Kaido using her would suffice. Whatever it is, even if you can justify it, she is what she is. Which is 30 and unemployed and living a fantasy in dad’s basement.

Yes. Kill or mutilate yourself if you really want freedom that bad. Kyros chopped off his own leg when Doffy was right there in front of him and almost certainly would’ve killed him. Luffy and Zoro were willing to do it. They didn’t even hesitate. Their drive for freedom is the real deal.

If Yamato chops of her hands to escape, she probably dies of bloodloss.

Like you can cut of your legs/feet and bandage the wound or something. Chop of both your hands and you'll die.
Cinera
Cinera
You wouldn't even be able to stop the bloodloss.
Cinera
Cinera
So I think you're applying unreasonable standards.

Yamato couldn't have done anything.

Unless she was willing to actually die (and why throw her life away when she believed wholeheartedly that her imprisonment would end in 20 years)?
Cinera
Cinera
Yamato is someone who was sentenced to a 20 year imprisonment in a maximum security prison, but was also given the option of taking her life at any time. I see nothing wrong with her waiting out her sentence.

This ain’t real life. She can cauterise the wound in fire, have cloth on hand to make a tourniquet with her mouth, anything. Luffy was willing to do it. Would he have died? Maybe but that’s how much he wanted to escape. I can’t make fun of Sanji’s shitty willpower and let this one slide too in good conscience.

I understand disliking the Oden cosplay and worship (I'm fine with it, but agree that it can be off-putting).
I understand disliking her cringe moments when she claims to be Oden (I dislike them too).
I understand disliking her concept as a Princess that was locked up in a Tower.

Depending on how badly you want freedom, even death is a fine price to pay. And besides, living your life entirely on a belief in fate or destiny is the most pathetic thing of all. You just threw up your hands and outsourced all your agency to fate. That’s what makes her pathetic, that this is how she’s lived her whole life.
Cinera
Cinera
> This ain’t real life.

True, but like I don't think Yamato could have reasonably expected to escape with her life.

Losing one arm is one thing. Losing both probably does kill you and if not it severely cripples you.
Cinera
Cinera
This is beside the point though. Oda wanted her to be imprisoned. He could just have easily placed the collar on her neck instead of her hands (he probably didn't like the image that would convey), but like it's something the author decided.
Den_Den_Mushi
Den_Den_Mushi
Like I said, Luffy was willing to do it. Zoro was in the process of cutting off two limbs. Would they have died immediately afterwards? Yeah maybe, but at least they went out trying to do something instead of believing blindly in something someone else said.
Cinera

Yamato withstood an endless barrage of cannon fire but was going to die to an explosion that wasn't all that big.

That's because the exploding cuffs were a plot device to keep her on Onigashima.

Oda wanted her to be imprisoned with no avenue of escape.
