And should we somehow believe in the readers' hypotheses and assume that Imu is stronger than 5 Shanks and Kaido combined, when Oda doesn't even give Imu and the Gorosei enough respect? With Doflamingo stating that Law's best plan to kill him would be to put him up against Kaido, while Doffy blackmails Imu-sama.

The hype around Imu came up because people thought he is naturally immortal and furthermore an ancient weapon, with what obliterated Lulusia Kingdom being some kind of entity he has control over. Until it turned out he just got the immortality surgery and uses Vegapunk's tool with the assistance of the Gorosei. Imu stocks didn't age well

Yes, and out of fear of bringing the character down from that high pedestal they've placed him on, people can't stop creating hyperboles and headcanons about his power level, which honestly seem to be based on how strong Saturn can appear here, with a rather terrible portrayal so far against Bonney, Sanji, and the weak trio.

With Imu's display of strength against Sabo being ridiculously poor for Imu as well, given that a guy who is stronger than 5 Kaidos failed to knock out a YC1 with his back turned while carrying an old man on his back.
