Can an American explain their tipping system to me? It has always appeared as a way for employers to push part of the burden of paying for wages onto their customers via social shaming. How much are you expected to tip? What is the consequence of not tipping? Etc.

I'm not certain you understand my point. The reach was about taking the worst possible interpretation. I read Nameless' comment and saw it as a bit of a wind-up, so the reaction seemed rather disproportionate. As stated however, I am not well-versed in this topic.
