I would also point out that extreme situations tend to be why rules exist in the first place. Slurs evoke IRL lynch mobs murdering the respective minorities. Mixing out-of-game and in-game puts people in positions of having to share their personal information or lose out, or puts the site mods...

Do you have a different definition of meta reading from me? Because people's play in old games just isn't the same as their IRL circumstances in my book...

It's within the rules to lie about being busy, but it's not really within the rules to try to affect people's reads based on your mom dying.

Yes, but why? Do you really consider it acceptable to put someone under pressure to reveal personal information? Should the game become about who can best prove that their close relative died?

Nah, the not-very-game-focused additional effort is not nearly as significant as near-replacement levels of low activity, for context.

Why?

Like, a trust tell is explicitly an agreement made outside of the game to behave a certain way across games, on the stake of your personal reputation outside of the game. It's explicitly bringing something outside the game into the game, and something that at least seems to have emotional weight...

At which point you wouldn't call it a trust tell. I mean, we can quibble over the use of the word promise, or agreement, or declaration of intent, but in the end you're setting up a contract that you have agreed not to break that is not specifically within the confines of the game.
