I don't think kid is gonna utilize the same tactics against shanks which he used against big mom. Different fights different tactics. His confidence at the last panel does indicates he has some cards to play with here. It is really not an empty bluster

The alliance with apoo and Hawkins was literally kid and killer going for the big yonko battle against red haired pirates. That wasn't going to be a hit and run adventure. That was going to be a full blown assault. Kid's intial hit and run tactics was not even bad.
