I think the WAY in which a lot of what I explained above came about was unique to the subcontinent and is why carries so much meaning for a lot of us (including our immediate ancestors) and where a sense of cultural unity comes from. I think it's a lot more complex than that but this is a good...

Again, like I had cited above the magic lies in the mood carried by the urdu/hindi phrase which gives the song it's soul and feeling. A lot of post independent singers (the era from where film/songs for us to hear began) were masters of that art. So anyone who appreciates those songs and that...

Which is why every song you hear of his carries a different feeling altogether. This would be difficult to gauge for you @solis , but even technically he's the most gifted singer I've ever heard. In fact post Indian independence would see aman emergence of a lot of singers (like Rafi) who are...

This is just the tip of the iceberg about what he was as a person. It's when you come to know about the little anecdotes that you actually realize all of the stuff I mentioned above. So pretty much everything he sang was really pure and almost had an angelic quality to it. I mean this would...

@solis If you insist so lol Just a bit more about the man himself Md Rafi is one of the purest souls I've come to know of, ever. Comes from a really humble background, almost always had a smile on his face, lead a really simplistic life, was a philanthropist, never had a squabble with anyone...

@solis I've done my best to post translations to those songs. But the nuance and magic carried by Urdu/Hindi in those songs is something which can only be understood when you know it 😭 and it's not even really the romance, but how each of those words are expressed (based on the meaning/mood)...

@AL sama Oh God The variation he brings in with every word, especially the way he says "mohabbat" differently at every instance. If someone just listens to the singing for what it is, it's out of the world

@solis In that context I feel so lucky to have enjoyed and experienced the best of both the worlds. I think it's just too much of a cultural disconnect from the west which probably doesn't make them realize the nuances behind those songs and why they sound the way they do from the context of...

@solis listen to this https://youtu.be/bkFv5ybbwW0 I guess yeah, the one relatable aspect of his singing is putting all of his soul into the song and the way he expresses certain words. Yes, singing style is the most divisive part in all of this. But I'm sure even then Rafi's songs have the...

I meant the kind of songs sung by that artist. I mean music is universal in the sense that you can relate to good (background) music and beats. But back then in Indian music a lot of emphasis was given to lyrics and the way a singer delivered those lyrics.
