Wasn't a lot of the pre-TS just the crew trying to maneuver an overleveled Luffy to the front lines of combat and regularly showing that he dwarfs his crew? Literally anything that isn't fighting is done for Luffy by the crew and they regularly show off these skills in addition to fights...

I mean gear 2 was about pumping blood harder, and G5 is all about that heartbeat... And it is the science arc where we find out they were extremely advanced...
