I seriously doubt any of the previous gen Great Heavens could have done anything remotely close to that. I'd even say they would have been mostly on the losing side...

You gotta give the props to Aokiji for facing Akainu for 10 days, being evenly matched with him and leaving permanent scars. The dude ended up losing the fight and a leg but he stood on business. Prime Sengoku wouldn't have lasted that long.
Shin/Ouhon/Mouten simply not being ready for that post when the nomination happened is totally fine.
And especially at the very peaks of their power (and before that too) in the future, no one in China will think they're living under say Kanki's shadow or Tou's or Moubu's or the old ones etc...
