The "payoff" was Luffy getring one-shotted by Kaido later at the start of Wano. The whole fifth emperor title was just a way of telling us he was nearing that emperor status but wasn't quite there yet, as we readers knew the end of Whole Cake was much more of a clutch escape that needed a ton...

Honestly i agree that Kid's willpower and stubborness is appealing, it's basically Luffy's but with less childlike innocence but also no mc plot armor. But trying to downplay Shanks is just downright saltiness at this point, hell we don't even exactly know what his "mentality" is. Shanks to me...
