I get what you say but you also need to take into consideration the context. In what kind of war does no one dies? When Oda showed "deaths" on screen they turn out to be fake-out deaths (Kinemon and the CP0 dude Kaido crushed) and actual [confirmed] deaths are just off screen (Izo and Ashura)...

For me it would be the characters deaths, more deaths would mean more tension in the story. The Onigashima Raid (or hell any raid for that matter) would've been 100 times more interesting. Shit ton of fake deaths that just makes it impossible to take any "death" in the series seriously.

The ending of a series doesn't really determine its quality, now matter how good or how bad that ending is. Look at AOT for instance, imo it's top 5 shounen even though its ending is horrendous.. That being said, while I'm a huge fan of the series, I can admit it's not the greatest shounen out...
