For a long time, many movie antagonists were clearly inspired by some of the manga villains (e.g.: Gasparde - Crocodile, Tesoro - DoFlamingo, etc.), but they at least had different backgrounds, they looked unique. Kaido is just Douglas Bullet with distinct looks and abilities (even Douglas Bullet's backstory with the Roger Pirates is virtually identical to Kaido's backstory with the Rocks Pirates... I'd bet that Bullet would be Rocks' crewmate instead of a Roger's crewmate if he was older).

The story's been going for so long that we've come full circle: now it's Oda who looks for inspiration at the animation department.

The problem isn't that Kaido doesn't have any depth.

Not every villain needs a grand backstory.

The problem is that Oda teased the readers about some deep backstory multiple (!) times (suicide motives, Oni background, Joyboy connection etc.) and didn't deliver on single one of those points.

If you tease something, better deliver. Otherwise you look like a fool.

Kaido was done dirty. "He was a super child soldier from Russia who got sold to the WG," is precisely his entire backstory. Even Hancock got more in Amazon Lily.

Gotta disagree boa barely had a backstory in her own Arc too she had like 3 or 4 panels and that's it

I gotta be honest, Kaido's character is a bit too simple to have really gotten too complex or in-depth. He's just a big brute who gets into fights and drinks a lot.

I understand people may have wanted more...but really, what you see is what you get, in this instance.

Exactly when you drop chapter 795, then you have two different versions of Kaido's character - a Kaido who fought Goofy was a vastly different character than a Kaido who fought the scabbards and Yamato
