Chapter Discussion 1044: All Problems with the Devil Fruit that got its name changed

Nika is clearly the One Piece version of Sun Wukong so naming this fruit after Sun Wukong would take away from originality. So Oda created the One Piece world's equivalent deity "Nika" so it catches us off guard and becomes upredictable.
Nothing to blame there, Oda is a genius because he still knows how to escalate and catch us offguard out of nowhere.

The real issue is the name change because of how unnecessary it is. Think of Hawkins who has the Straw fruit. He does crazy things that straw “should not be able to do” even without awakening…yet for some reason Oda now wants to say that rubber shouldn’t do the things Luffy does like change trajectory mid-flight. It’s pretty silly when you think about it.
The awakening still works just fine even if it’s kept as just the gomu gomu no mi.

In which myth is it mentioned that Sun Wukong is made of rubber?
The only reason to make your own version of a Sun Wukong is because the actual one would restrict the abilities you could give the user, so it definitely is very lazy. It’s especially so because there’s no precedent for it since every other mythical Zoan is based on a real myth.
Coming up with random and inconsistent things for the sake of being unpredictable is neither good nor “genius.”
Game of Thrones Season 8 serves as a perfect example of that.
what is actually genius is setting up developments well ahead of time while keeping things consistent with the already established rules in your story.

People are so whinny bro. They want a foreshadow for every single thing just so that they can say that was predictable. The destiny thing is old news and I think Oda gave out enough hints. I guess people can only be mad at WG not trying harder to kill Luffy. Fanbase hates Luffy and I love to see them mad whenever Luffy catches a W. Last chapter they were happy and this chapter they mad.
This reminds of the time when Oda said he never regret giving Luffy that fruit and he wanted to draw silly things. I am surprised people made it this far into series and wanting Naruto art style power up lmao.
Also Luffy awakening and recovering makes sense. He is a Zoan user and this same thing literally happened at Impel down with the zoans.

I meant the concept of a Deity altering something. Sun Wukong was able to stretch his staff because he wanted so. He was also known to be a demon before he turned into a deity. It fits Luffy who was also known as some kind of "devil" but in reality his true nature is the nature of a deity and same as Sun Wukong he can alter something at his will. This is far beyond arguing just with "rubber". Oda thought probably that it would be lame or controvers to have a Sun Wukong fruit, also because Sun Wukong is not that popular and more fictive than a Buddha.
The solution is originality and greating an OC Deity that has even been foreshadowed throughout the whole post timeskip.

Having to create your own imaginary deity is bad because it means you couldn’t be creative enough with existing ones and took the easy way out of making it literally anything you want. Like rubber being the main trait of a deity associated with the sun.

By that reasoning, since Chopper can extend his horns then you could just write him to have eaten a fruit based on Sun Wukong but change it to the fictional deity Peepee poopoo who’s a river goddess that has the main trait of being a humanoid reindeer.
I don’t see anything beautiful about that. Neither should Sun Wukong’s popularity in comparison to Buddha even matter. Like wth?

That’s something any writer can do to get themselves out of a corner because existing material is too hard for them to work with. And no Nika has not been foreshadowed all through post-time skip in the slightest…not to mention that still leaves the entire first half of the story with nothing.

1.- God of Sun was introduced since Sky Island, it was just in wano, half year ago that his name was presented lol. Joy boy was also introduced a time ago, Oda just made a connection between both.

Again, Oda only connected Joyboy to Nika 30 chapters ago. There’s nothing else besides that, so what made you think they were connected before the shoehorned exposition of Who’s Who?

It has nothing to do with Rubber, nothing says that Nika is indeed a God, it is just the title it had.
Godly abilities are not within the DF of Luffy, it is the usage it had that it gave him godly feats.
And when we talk about Godly... it doesnt mean it is an another tier, look and Sengoku with a damn Buda which is also a god-like dude. Or even a Dragon, which were said to be Gods from some myth, and there is many examples.

Agreed. Just keeping it rubber is better than trying to tie it to mythological figures that don’t work or creating one just to make it fit.
“Nika the Sun God” doesn’t say that Nika is a god? Weren’t you the one that tried to refer to the “Sun God” being mentioned in Skypiea in the first place?
