Questions & Mysteries A Soulless Person in One Piece

#1
The popular meaning;

(soʊlləs ) adjective. If you describe a thing or person as soulless, you mean that they lack human qualities and the ability to feel or produce deep feelings.
Displaying a lack of sympathy, empathy or general emotions. unfeeling. callous. inhuman.
But when it comes to One Piece world, a science fiction series, then there would be more to this, because there are abilities that relies on ''soul'', and there could be even benefits of having a soul or not having a soul.

We never see a real ''soulless'' person in One Piece, I guess closest thing to that, would be the ''shadows'' that Moria can manipulate due to his DF power;

Brook: ''A shadow is ... 'another soul' that follows a person wherever he goes.''
---Chapter 455

So there are ''types'' of souls like shadow in One Piece, but then, a person who doesn't have a shadow, would die like when Moria steals it, I don't think it works like that, Moria simply manipulates a type soul, thus since the soul is connected to the person, that person is still needs to be alive, if person dies then the shadow will die too, so Moria can't use shadows when the owner of the shadow dies. It's still connected. It's not like a random shadow of a non-living thing, it's probably a weaker version of a soul, but still due to his hax, Moria can control that soul via controlling a small part of that soul (which is shadow).

So, the point is Moria can't randomly steal shadows from non-living things, it should be a living thing, and he puts it in corpses to revive them.

If there is a natural born, soulless person, that doesn't mean that person is going to die or won't have a shadow, because as I said, non-living things also have shadows, so the logic should apply to them, but only that Moria won't able to steal that soulless person's shadow. So, that person might be immune to Moria's hax.

Later on, Oda continued to focus on ''souls'' by giving a direct ability of manipulating souls to Big mom, whoever afraids of Big mom is vulnerable to soul steal, but again, I think this soul thing is a catalyzer for stealing years for people, because Brook has a soul and he is basically an immortal and he was wondering on the sea with soul for a whole year, and nothing happened to his soul, souls don't have time-limits, or it shouldn't have, so Big mom is actually stealing their life energy by using their souls as a bridge.

---- Chapter 443

If Brook's soul can travel around the sea for a whole year, and then revive the corpse of Brook, how souls can die due to years?

--- Chapter 829

As you can see, Big mom kills a person by stealing their years, is she stealing their souls? Or energy? I don't think it's their souls, it's their energy / life span that she is stealing.

She also said that her special homies are different because she gave her own souls.

--- Chapter 835

--- Chapter 456

The main differences between ''shadow souls'' and ''life span souls'' are;

- Shadow souls can be put into corpses and other people, life span souls can't.
- Life span souls can be used according to the life span time that Big mom stole, even after the owner of that life span soul dies its usable while shadow souls can't be used if the owner dies.

So why life spans souls can't be put into other human and corpses? Could it be related to the same reason why a person can't eat 2 Devil Fruits at the same time? But then, why not corpses? Perhaps the corpses still carries a part of the users soul, and which is why it can't be done even after the person dies? So this confirms my theory on why the souls can live forever and it shouldn't have any time-limit, and why Big mom doesn't steal the souls, but she only manipulate souls and uses souls as a bridge to steal people's life energy or their life span.

Which is why when Big mom creates a hommie, we don't see that hommie acting like the owner of the soul, they don't have the same characteristics, otherwise we would definitely see a Pedro-like hommie who would act like Pedro, but we never did, while when Moria uses shadows on corpses, that shadows acts like the original owner. Look how Luffy's shadow, Zoro's shadow and Sanji's shadow act like when they were in corpses.

So what we know that soul carries characteristics of the owner; it's emotional, it has empathy.

So if there is a person in One Piece, who doesn't have a soul, then that person wouldn't have any empathy, emotions and that person would lack to produce deep feelings.

But, there is still a difference between spirit and soul, Rayleigh specifically says Haki is spiritual ability, not soul.

While you can look for many sources about the difference between spirit and soul, I think the best explanation that I can find of was this;

''The main difference between them is that the soul is the spiritual part and spirit is a non-human entity. hence the spirit is used to refer to supernatural beings and soul refers to an individual’s spirituality.''
Spirit can be a non-human entity, thus even if a person doesn't have a soul, I guess they can still use all the Haki types in One Piece.

So if you can imagine soulless person in One Piece, who would be that person?

I guess Blackbeard is the perfect definition for this, because he has no empathy, he never has any deep relationship with the crew he was part of for years, he was inside of WB pirates for almost 20 years, and he killed his nakama without any remorse.

--- Chapter 552

There could be other examples like Kurozumi Kanjuro, who also acted perfectly for years, but then Kanjuro had reasons to do that to Kozuki clan, since he was part of Kurozumi clan.

And I will explain the main difference between them.

Another proof for Blackbeard's lack of empathy or sympathy is that you can clearly see what he asks from Impel Down Level 6 prisoners, he asks them to kill their own cell mates, so he can take the strongest ones;

--- Chapter 581

If we come the main point why I think Blackbeard might be soulless;

- He should be different than others, since he has 2 DF ability.
- He doesn't sleep.

I know there are also theories about Blackbeard having 2 or 3 souls, but in theory, shouldn't Big mom also able to use multiple DF powers if it was related to having more souls? I think it should be the opposite.

We also know Big mom sleeps, and even her hommies sleeps. But Blackbeard does not, if Blackbeard has multiple souls separated inside of himself, like there are hommies, he could still sleep as hommies also sleeps.

Big mom and all of her hommies are sleeping;

--- Chapter 855

While Blackbeard, even when he was almost a kid and he was in a 3 days long battle, he still doesn't sleep;

--- Chapter 966

It's really a inhuman thing not to sleep, a soulless person might not be sleep, that would make sense for me. If we look into other science-fiction materials, we can also see similar thing to this;

In Supernatural TV series, when a person loses their soul, that person doesn't sleep.

Soullessness is a state of being when a human has their soul forcibly removed from their body while still living. When a soul is removed humans lose the the capacity for empathy. The reaction of the human can vary; some may turn violent, being set-off by the most minute incidents, others may show a glib indifference to their surroundings. While losing ones soul does not necessarily lead to amoral behavior or violence, it has shown to be the outcome for most people. One universal symptom of soullessness, however, is that the person no longer requires sleep.
Could this situation be similar and could it be the reason why Blackbeard doesn't sleep?

They also compared this ''soullessness'' to a ''black hole'';

You know Jack, our galaxy is all bright and shiny and spinny, but in its center lies this very large black hole. Its the same with me. I'm all bright and shiny, obviously -- Not so much spinny. But inside? Empty. […] I feel... nothing. Losing your soul doesn't make you bad. It doesn't make you anything. It's um... an absence of... of pity, of empathy... of humanity.
And why would Blackbeard lack his soul? Is that a speciality of a special members of the D. Clan?

If you don't have a soul, does it make you stronger and superior to others?

For sure, if a person didn't have a soul in One Piece, that would give protection against abilities like shadow soul ripping or life span soul ripping, but could it be more than that?

Perhaps having a soul is the reason why a person only can have 1 DF power, without having a soul you can have more than 1 DF power? Perhaps you can use Haki more, and your Haki reserves wouldn't get weaker in time if you don't have a soul, since the soul; humanistic emotions can be a hinderance to the Haki user, we know when they get angry or shocked they lose the control of their Haki. We know Big mom rips others life energy when they were scared and she manipulates the souls to do that, perhaps when there is no soul, your spirit energy, thus your Haki might be stronger. Just like being superior when you don't need to sleep, while others needs to sleep.

What do you guys think?

Interesting and well thought out theory.

I think the reason behind Blackbeard not being able to sleep is that he's a victim of experimentation.

It would be interesting if Blackbeard's hypothetical soullessness increased his haki strength. Most people in the OP fandom tend to believe that Blackbeard's haki is weak, it would be interesting if Blackbeard's haki was actually far stronger than a normal person's.

Marco mentioned that Blackbeard has a unique body, that's the reason why he can eat more than one devil fruit imo.

This got me wondering can moria take the shadows out of a pacifista a put it inside his zombie army and since there is not much personality in them to begin with it would be much easier for from the original undead soul to override and resurface.

This is a fascinating theory that helps explain a lot of Blackbeard's behavior. I always thought it was super strange for a man who spent time with Ace but didn't know that he was Luffy's brother. Ace is Luffy's biggest fan and bragged about him all the time. So BB would have to be utterly oblivious or just uncaring like you indicated.

Also interesting connection with being soulless and unable to sleep. As Shanks mentioned there would be a lot of advantages for not needing sleep. Free time to train haki, recruiting possible members for your future pirate crew, coming up with schemes, studying history like the Poneglyphs.

If BB is a soulless person, it would explain why he felt a connection to the Yami Yami no Mi, because he emphasized that it was the most evil or dangerous fruit depending on translation. Though there must be some of kind of limit to BB's Haki potential because theoretically he could have mastered his haki style like Shanks during the time he spent on Whitebeard's ship. Which is possibly why BB was obsessed with finding the Yami Yami No mi because it was the only fruit that would allow BB to exploits his "unique body"

But its also tragic because how could BB lost something so vital as the soul? Because by this logic Doffy has a soul and he is the devil reincarnate. Being unable to sleep was also something that Orochi mentioned in his past when he was being persecuted by the people of Wano. It makes me wonder if BB will have a similar past because he is a member of the D. Clan. BB is twice Luffy's age so maybe he experienced persecution like Robin and Orochi for his status as a D member? Perhaps BB was a test subject by the World Government/Vegapunk? It would explain why BB kept to himself and avoided attention, hence why he never got a bounty. He didn't want to make a splash unless he had the right tools to enact his plan. What are your thoughts Erkan?

It's an interesting idea that I've had in mind for a while but never made any effort to put it together as you did, so I appreciate it. I've been thinking about the possibility of devil fruits containing souls of superhumans from the Void Century that were imprisoned inside them and used as weapons by the twenty kingdoms, which would lead to releasing them as the final act of freedom in this story while giving it full closure by eliminating devil fruits forever. I assume Blackbeard will be deeply related to this (two fruits, gravity, a D.) and wouldn't surprise me if the Marshall family had something to do with said imprisonment.

In this scenario of the soulless Teach, he would be capable of eating two devil fruits because normal people can only have one as their own soul can only keep controlled one strange soul (which enters the body by eating the fruit and changes the DNA in a balanced way). With Teach lacking his own soul, he would have space for two of them coming from the Gura Gura and the Yami Yami, although this would complicate the possibility of getting a third power.

Anyways, two quick ideas to add to the theory:

—Since you mentioned that haki isn't the same as soul, let's remember that animals have haki yet lack a soul, hence why animal homies are a thing.

—Haki is still connected to souls in some degree because Law interchanged Sanji and company's hearts (which I assume were their souls in a metaphorical way) and they kept their haki (Sanji could sense Kin'emon's body while in Nami's body).

—Since Tashigi kept Smoker's devil fruit while in his body, we can assume that fruits don't go into the "heart" (soul) of the user.
