Nah, whenever Oda draws a close up of Akainu it doesn't even look like a One Piece character, he legit looks like a portrait of someone irl. Shanks still looks like a cartoon character.

Oda is making Akainu very detailed like this to mimic Bunta Sugawara as much as possible. Shanks looks like a generic One Piece character in comparison to this. Akainu really stands out among One Piece chara, first time I seen him in MF I thought I was reading another series because of how photorealistic Oda would draw him at times.

Then I read he modelled him after who he believes is the most handsome man, and that he wants to cherish him. And it all made sense.

A lot of Admirals do, the difference is Akainu is actually modelled after who Oda literally believes is/was the most handsome man on the planet. And Oda does his absolute best effort to make Akainu look as close to him as possible despite the rest of the cast lacking the same detail.

Naturally as the artist drawing who you believe to be the most handsome man in the world, when you are putting ink to paper you are inclined to give that character a different level of respect over anyone when it comes to his features. Because not only would he have to do the real life individual justice, but he wants to bring that look to life in his manga. Shanks doesn't have this incentive backing him, it's hard to compete with that.

Akainu isn't drawn for anime fangirls to swoon over him if that's what you think I'm saying. That's definitely more Shanks territory.

Taking character versions into account:

1. Young BM is the hottest Yonko.
2. Mihawk and Shanks are pretty conventionally handsome.
3. Luffy is pleasant looking.
4. Buggy is a clown. I don't think he's ugly or handsome either ways.
5. WB looks like a bull elephant in human form.
6. Kaido looks like a thug, both old and young
7. BB is...well, BB
8. Old BM

Do we count Roger as a Yonko? He'd be up there if we're talking about his sick version, pre-TS not so much.

For Admirals:
1. Post-TS Akainu with the beard and scars tends to elicit a LOT of thirsty reactions in my experience.
2. Young Garp is definitely #2. With the beard he kinda looks like Bluto from Popeye though
3. Kuzan looks pretty good but is kinda carried by his goggles
4.Kizaru as an Admiral looks pretty good to me. He looked way too old when he was young but he grew into his face.
5. Sengoku pre-TS is pretty stately looking.
6. Fuji and post-TS Sengoku are like Luffy, pleasant looking without being a supermodel.
7. Pre-TS Akainu looked like Humungousaur from Ben 10
8.Aramaki would be #1 if he actually looked like his actor.
9. Vice Admiral Kizaru and Kuzan were not handsome men.
