Oda left a hint in Aokiji’s eyes. one side clearly shows IMU and the other a flame. We know WG supported Akainu not Aokiji; and we just saw IMU cares about putting his subordinates in charge as rulers.
Chances are high that after Akainu could not beat Aokiji for days and maybe was even about to loose, at which point IMU appeared to end it and amped Akainu to beat Aokiji.
This would explain why Aokiji joined Blackbeard whose goal is the “world” because he’s using Blackbeard to get at IMU who he wants to take down.

This would also largely solve any issue with Akainu not being strong enough in the final war because he would be amped to a crazy degree by IMU.
