Nope, he was doing worse than what he should have until then just for the sake of plot.
The plot is always working against Luffy until the last round, now we're seeing his real power level
Absolutely nothing wrong with Luffy fighting a slightly weakened Kaido as his equal
He is the only one who can do it currently as stated by himself and Kaido

Everybody helping Luffy and he getting saved by others is plot working against him?

Again, if last round were Luffy vs Kaido at 1010-1013 would be a valid argument. But is not the case. Nothing changed from where Luffy lost to now. And Kaido "supposebly" has a gear of his own. So Luffy already lost to "sober" Kaido, he has no chance against "drunk power up" Kaido.
