What up with building a crew full of ability users instead of having some train as haki masters or something.

If they all travel in same ship, you can just sink it.

It's like they are asking to get sunk

I guess aokiji now could freeze the sea to stop them from falling but before that they were toast

they do both. Plus the Blackbeard have a lot of Islands they own so they aren't sailing all the time.

The Straw Hats did nothing but prepare, no campaigns, for two years. And only three of them learned Haki in that time. It's much smarter to recruit numbers, as some will already know Haki as well, and gain abilities as it's much quicker to utilize in and out of combat
