FIRST FIGHT

Athelstan from Vikings
Athelstan is a priest who is taken as a slave by the vikings
For the rest of the show Athelstan acts like a bridge between the pagan culture and christianity
For the first few episodes he is used as a tool to explain the norse culture and beliefs but as the show goes on he gets deeper and more interesting as a character
His charscter arc and development from a priest to a viking warrior is beautiful to look at
He struggles with his faith and loyalty
He starts adjusting to viking culture but can't quite forget his christian roots
He believes in Jesus's kindness but at sea in Thor's thunder
he denies jesus but the second he is afraid he touches his cross
He goes on raids but when he sees a bible on the ground he is faced with the evil he's doing
It's facinating to look at his relationship with Ragnar and how they each develope and affect each other
As athelstan is growing more fond of the norsemen, starts believing in their gods and goes on raids with them Ragnar loses faith in his gods and is leaning more towards Jesus
This is my favorite Athelstan scene
Praying with the King of pagans

VS

Suzaku Kururugi from CG
Suzaku Kururugi is the anti-heroic deuteragonist of the anime and manga series Code Geass. He is an Honorary Citizen and soldier of the Holy Britannian Empire and the best friend and rival of Lelouch vi Britannia.

According to Lelouch, before the Britannian invasion of Japan, Suzaku was somewhat selfish, rarely putting others before himself. He also acted somewhat bratty when he first met Lelouch, beating Lelouch up and bullying him.

He dedicated his cause not to endorse terrorism or rebellion, which he believed would only result in the pointless killing. Unwilling to sacrifice the innocent, he also had a strong sense of loyalty, never questioning the orders of his superiors. Despite that, elders showed him to be willing to stab them in the back if necessary. Suzaku also wished to take responsibility for his actions, and his ultimate goal was to atone for the killing of his father.

Suzaku is the son of Japan's last prime minister, Genbu Kururugi. His existence was kept a secret from the public until after the war. Suzaku met Lelouch vi Britannia and his sister Nunnally vi Britannia when they moved to the Kururugi residence as a diplomatic peace trade. At first, Suzaku despised Lelouch because he thought he was a prince who didn't care about anyone. As time passed by, however, he came to know Lelouch better, and they soon became best friends. They became separated when Britannia invaded Japan but reunited in the Shinjuku Ghetto.

When Britannia began its invasion of Japan, Suzaku got mortified by the violence, and his father's belief that resisting to the bitter end was preferable to surrender. Unable to change his father's mind, Suzaku murdered him during a heated exchange. Britannia covered up the incident, and Suzaku's life spared, while the government was thrown into disarray and surrendered to Britannia. Lelouch believes that, had Genbu lived, Japan would have likely been torn apart by war once the other major powers decided to intervene. His guilt over the incident causes Suzaku to constantly place himself on the frontlines in the hope of atoning his actions by death. It also inspires Suzaku's belief that the ends achieved by using the wrong means are meaningless since he created peace through murder.

After firing the F.L.E.I.J.A. warhead under the command of Lelouch's Geass, he decides to achieve his desired results regardless of the means, even if it means joining forces with his enemy, Lelouch, and killing people to make true his objectives and ideals. Despite that fact, Suzaku is still interested in achieving a world where everyone can live happily and have a tomorrow, as seen in the last episode when all the acts of Lelouch and Suzaku were to achieve that world.

In the eyes of the world, Kururugi Suzaku is a terrible knight, not to mention a terrible person. He is a traitor in all respectsโ€“he has betrayed his country, his people, his morality. Heโ€™s almost as hated as Emperor Lelouch himselfโ€“and undoubtedly his โ€œfuneralโ€ was the furthest thing from well-attended.

It is only in private that the mask of brutality comes off and yet you get the sense that Suzaku keeps up the mask even then. When Lelouch is falling apart and drowns in self-doubt, Suzaku pushes him to remember their mission, to remember Zero Requiem. There is no room for weaknessโ€“they must play their roles perfectly.

How ironic it is for Suzaku to lower his mask exactly when he dons the mask of Zero? The assassination of Lelouch, though clearly and intentionally public, is also an incredibly intimate moment between our knight and king. His acceptance of his fate as the new Zero and the conditions upon which Lelouch dictates to him with his dying breath are characteristics of it.

Ultimately, one can look at Lelouch and Suzaku as two sides of the same coin, and thus this is why I believe Suzaku is the best deuteragonist out there.

SECOND FIGHT

Askeladd from Vinland Saga

In the manga Vinland Saga, Askeladd serves the role as the second most important character perfectly. The weight of his decisions impacts pivotal story arcs and pushes the narrative more than the youthful Thorfinn โ€”the actual protagonist. But that alone isnโ€™t what makes Askeladd such a great character. What defines Askeladd is the relationship he shares with Thorfinn that accents every choice made and hangs over both with looming dread.

Quite simplyโ€”Askeladd was responsible for the death of Thorfinnโ€™s father, a well revered former Viking. Swearing vengeance upon Askeladd, a prepubescent Thorfinn stole himself upon Askeladdโ€™s crew with the single thought of murdering this man. A deal was struck after several arduous tasks, Thorfinn would serve Askeladd faithfully and every completed assignment, Thorfinn would have the chance to murder Askeladd.

This dichotomy puts these two constantly at odds despite often times cooperating towards a single goalโ€”always Askeladdโ€™s goal.

Askeladd is the wall that Thorfinn strives to ascend and never quite reaches. Heโ€™s the schemer who is happy to use Thorfinnโ€™s how turbulent emotions and exceptional talent for life taking to his own benefit.

All this comes to a head after successfully completing a task in Northern Englandโ€”where Thorfinn challenges Askeladd yet again. This time though itโ€™s revealed that, after a brutal beat down, that Thorfinn will never overcome Askeladd. And the simple reason is because Thorfinn will never consent to doing the rational thing, killing Askeladd in his sleep.

Here we learn that Askeladd was once similar to Thorfinn. He was a slave however, watching his mother descend into insanity as she physically weakened. Given the first opportunity, Askeladd wormed his way into his father/masters inner circle and struck. He murdered his father and half siblings. His grudge was dealt with.

Askeladd represents a purpose for Thorfinn but also a mirror into a whole new world. One of violence and deceit, one that Thorfinn cannot immerse himself in despite being a prolific killer himself. Askeladd succeeds so well thanks to his own similarities and growth from where Thorfinn shies away from.

Even beyond his demise, sacrificing himself in an uncharacteristic display of altruism, he remained a pivotal figure for Thorfinn. His death shattered Thorfinnโ€™s will to continue and brought Thorfinn back to his fathers earnest intentions as opposed to the world of violence that Askeladd so embodies.

He is the cynical schemer who comes from a humble origin but nonetheless aspires to greatness. Carrying us all along the way.

vs

Dazai Osamu from BSD

OSAMU DAZAI

Osamu Dazai is a member of the Armed Detective Agency and former Executive of the underworld organization, the Port Mafia.

Dazai is a mysterious person, his true intentions are never revealed unless he reveals them. The person who got closest to the truth of his personality, as acknowledged by Dazai himself, was his friend.

Because of his aptitude despite his youth, Dazai contributed to about half the Mafia's profits for at least two years.

VS

Killua Zoldyck
Killua is a member of the Zoldyck family, who are a family of legendary assassins. Since birth, he trained endlessly in the art of assassination. He eventually ran away from his family and profession out of boredom and joined the Hunter exam to pass time. He befriended Gon almost immediately and has loyally followed his best friend since then.

Killua is usually a kind-hearted and cheerful, cheeky boy, but if provoked, he becomes extremely deadly and bloodthirsty, able to kill an enemy in seconds.

He is confident and aware of his abilities and strengths, and not afraid to speak his mind, but also smart enough to know when to hold his tongue. He can get embarrassed easily when someone compliments him or openly shows affection towards him.

He is very intelligent and quick-thinking and skilled in analysis, particularly induction. He is able to calmly and rapidly form strategies to adapt to stressful situations.

Due to his training as an assassin, it's an ingrained habit of his to be extremely cautious when approaching a fight, often assuming the worst case scenario, so he is quicker to flee than to try to face an apparently stronger opponent. For most of the series, this is his greatest flaw. He is also a loyal friend who is selfless to a fault, and suffers greatly trying to help his friends without a single thought to his own health.

He is also from the transmutation Nen group. He constantly strives to improve his Nen ability, developing many interesting techniques as the show progresses.

He is also the third person to have a transmutation Nen as his father and grandfather are also transmuters. Coincidentally, all three family members have silver hair.

At the beginning of the series, Killua was very rude and knew nothing about being a good friend. Meeting Gon changed him drastically. During the Hunter exam, Killua failed because of his older brother. Killua has a fear of people stronger than him, which results in him running away in many fights. In some fights, Killua doesnโ€™t give it his all because he underestimated himself. If you think you canโ€™t do something, you probably canโ€™t, but if you believe you definitely can. This show told us multiple times that believing always helps. Killua never did this, he underestimated himself, he was easily scared, and he was rude. These traits summarize Killuaโ€™s bad side. These are also the traits that were eventually removes by the end of the series.

In the manga, Killua still has room to improve too. As I was saying, it was Illumiโ€™s fault Killua failed the exam. Illumi planted a needle in Killuaโ€™s mind, which was his main cause of fear. After the hunter exam, this needle was still in his head. If youโ€™ve seen the anime, itโ€™s obvious that Killua literally pulled the needle out of his head during one of the fights.

It took a few arcs, but during the Chimera ant arc he pulled the needle out during a fight. This fight was because he was protecting Gon, which is probably why he was able to do so. This fight was a key point in Killuaโ€™s mind, because he finally freed himself from Illumiโ€™s grasp. This removed both the fear from stronger opponents and the bad thoughts he had about himself.

Another key thing that changed was his attitude. Killua was very rude, but after meeting Gon he became very caring and loyal. I believe this is the affect of friendship. From personal experiences, I know friendship can do many things. Killuaโ€™s situation made this even more obvious. Living in a family of pro-assassins, Killua has no friends. His family thought that friendships were just โ€˜useless distractions.โ€™ However, Silva told Killua to never abandon his friends, which made Killua decide to spend the rest of his life with Gon. He didnโ€™t want to become an assassin, despite being in a family of pro-assassins, because of Gon. After becoming friends with Gon, he saw light in the world. Seeing this made Killua realize how to properly treat a friend, and he risked his life many times for Gon, as Gon did the same. Killua swore to do anything to help Gon, and he put Gonโ€™s life and happiness over his all the time. At the beginning of the series, Killua didnโ€™t even know what having a friend meant. Also, we canโ€™t forget the physical character development of both Killua and Gon. At the end of the series, they became so strong and achieved their goals!

I already wanted to read/watch Code Geass, Vinland Saga and Bungo Stray Dogs, but these entries just made me more interesting.

Especially Askeladd, he seems like a really intriguing character.

R1 pretty hard.
Athelstan was my 2nd favorite character in Vikings, his dynamic with Ragnar is the best part of the series.

Suzaku is underrated, he's the best character of CG after Lelouch. I love how he goes from a typical altruist and delusional protagonist to a very realistic guy in the second season.
