FIRST FIGHT

Killua Zoldyck
Killua is a member of the Zoldyck family, who are a family of legendary assassins. Since birth, he trained endlessly in the art of assassination. He eventually ran away from his family and profession out of boredom and joined the Hunter exam to pass time. He befriended Gon almost immediately and has loyally followed his best friend since then.

Killua is usually a kind-hearted and cheerful, cheeky boy, but if provoked, he becomes extremely deadly and bloodthirsty, able to kill an enemy in seconds.

He is confident and aware of his abilities and strengths, and not afraid to speak his mind, but also smart enough to know when to hold his tongue. He can get embarrassed easily when someone compliments him or openly shows affection towards him.

He is very intelligent and quick-thinking and skilled in analysis, particularly induction. He is able to calmly and rapidly form strategies to adapt to stressful situations.

Due to his training as an assassin, it's an ingrained habit of his to be extremely cautious when approaching a fight, often assuming the worst case scenario, so he is quicker to flee than to try to face an apparently stronger opponent. For most of the series, this is his greatest flaw. He is also a loyal friend who is selfless to a fault, and suffers greatly trying to help his friends without a single thought to his own health.

He is also from the transmutation Nen group. He constantly strives to improve his Nen ability, developing many interesting techniques as the show progresses.

He is also the third person to have a transmutation Nen as his father and grandfather are also transmuters. Coincidentally, all three family members have silver hair.

At the beginning of the series, Killua was very rude and knew nothing about being a good friend. Meeting Gon changed him drastically. During the Hunter exam, Killua failed because of his older brother. Killua has a fear of people stronger than him, which results in him running away in many fights. In some fights, Killua doesn’t give it his all because he underestimated himself. If you think you can’t do something, you probably can’t, but if you believe you definitely can. This show told us multiple times that believing always helps. Killua never did this, he underestimated himself, he was easily scared, and he was rude. These traits summarize Killua’s bad side. These are also the traits that were eventually removes by the end of the series.

In the manga, Killua still has room to improve too. As I was saying, it was Illumi’s fault Killua failed the exam. Illumi planted a needle in Killua’s mind, which was his main cause of fear. After the hunter exam, this needle was still in his head. If you’ve seen the anime, it’s obvious that Killua literally pulled the needle out of his head during one of the fights.

It took a few arcs, but during the Chimera ant arc he pulled the needle out during a fight. This fight was because he was protecting Gon, which is probably why he was able to do so. This fight was a key point in Killua’s mind, because he finally freed himself from Illumi’s grasp. This removed both the fear from stronger opponents and the bad thoughts he had about himself.

Another key thing that changed was his attitude. Killua was very rude, but after meeting Gon he became very caring and loyal. I believe this is the affect of friendship. From personal experiences, I know friendship can do many things. Killua’s situation made this even more obvious. Living in a family of pro-assassins, Killua has no friends. His family thought that friendships were just ‘useless distractions.’ However, Silva told Killua to never abandon his friends, which made Killua decide to spend the rest of his life with Gon. He didn’t want to become an assassin, despite being in a family of pro-assassins, because of Gon. After becoming friends with Gon, he saw light in the world. Seeing this made Killua realize how to properly treat a friend, and he risked his life many times for Gon, as Gon did the same. Killua swore to do anything to help Gon, and he put Gon’s life and happiness over his all the time. At the beginning of the series, Killua didn’t even know what having a friend meant. Also, we can’t forget the physical character development of both Killua and Gon. At the end of the series, they became so strong and achieved their goals!

SECOND FIGHT

Hiei from Yu Yu Hakusho
Hiei
(Flying Shadow) (also known as Jaganshi Hiei Master of the Evil Eye: Flying Shadow), is a main character in the anime and manga series YuYu Hakusho.

Hiei prefers to keep his distance from others, so he often comes across as aloof and elusive. He has a rather cynical and even misanthropic view of the world around him, often belittling and mocking humans and their emotions and the significance they place on friendship and life. And while he is relatively taciturn, he occasionally squabbles with and insults his teammates, especially Kuwabara. It is obvious that deep down he holds a certain amount of respect and kinship for his teammates, but seems to be closest to Kurama and Yusuke. While he holds an affinity of kinship towards demons, this goes as equally far as his preference for humans, despising weaker demons, including braggarts and "tourists" who lack impetus for a degree of respect from him.

As a fighter, Hiei is very unbiased when it comes to his enemies. He shows the same degree of ruthlessness to his foes - regardless of age or gender. This is seen when he terrorizes Ruka and the Masked-Fighter with threats of death as his power is returning. According to Kurama, however, he has an honor code that prevents him from going all out against an opponent he perceives as weaker than himself. In battle, Hiei has killed the most opponents on the team- often making good on a threat he made at the outset. He is also phenomenally arrogant, and has a tendency to underestimate his opponents; this was noted to be one of his greatest weak points, which people such as Genkai were very aware of, that lead to Hiei's defeat against Yū Kaitō's Power of Taboo. Apparently, this later invoked heavy irony as Hiei mocked Yusuke for being able to defeat Toguro, yet was able to get easily captured by humans, only for Hiei to experience the same result which was contradictory to Yusuke's expectations. Despite belittling Kuwabara's intelligence at every opportunity he gets, he himself is not a terribly cerebral fighter. His basic tendency in battle is to charge in at full power and simply overwhelm his opponent. However, he can still be quite a clever combatant when the situation calls for it. However, he shows a surprising degree of sincerity, warmth, and protectiveness when around Yukina.

It is made clear in both the anime and the manga that he holds the demoness Mukuro in high esteem, perhaps higher than any other character. He respects her for her power and accomplishments. At the end of the series, there is clearly a bond between them, as it is made clear that its by his choice that he remains at her side. He also goes out of his way to free her from her past, breaking her shackle in the anime and delivering her abusive father to her as a birthday present in the manga.

Hiei’s family back story is full of abuse and suffering. It paints how grim the fates of demons can be. Because of his past, he can be spiteful towards humans who, in his eyes, grow up with love and friendship. Despite this, Hiei is capable of love and care as evidenced by his protectiveness towards Yukina, his twin sister, and his teammates.

He is one character that I feel distanced from because of his background story and initial temperament. Yet, he is consistently one of the top popular characters among Team Urameshi and in YYH.

His positive change from a vengeful individual to a more caring and protective one seems to foreshadow the change of the Demon World at the end of the series. I wonder if Togashi had planned for the parallel.

Hiei prefers to work on his own agenda, and has a notorious reputation in Demon World as a killer even when he was a D Class demon. Despite this, deep down he has struggled with his identity as a loner and his abandonment.

Hiei comes off as an arrogant person mainly because of his prowess as a fighter. Since, he has been winning most of his fights, he has little respect for demons weaker than him. He is extremely tactical in fighting his opponents and always has several plans to follow whenever facing an opponent.

He is not really interested in being friends with other people apart from a few like Kurama mainly because he doesn’t associate much with other people. Being alone most of the time probably led to him being this way.

Life lessons from Hiei
Even though, one might think of Hiei as a ruthless assassin, there are certain things that we can learn from him.

Do whatever you can to reach your goal
Hiei goes to extreme lengths to meet his objectives. This is eminent from the fact that he undertook the Jagan operation which was extremely painful. The fact that he went through such an ordeal speaks volumes about his character. He knew getting the Jagan implant was essential for him and this shows us that he was willing to do whatever was right for him to reach his goal.

Obviously, you have to weigh the pros and cons of every decision that you take. You must know what are the things that you will be giving up to obtain your goal. If what you get in return is more than what you are willing to give up, then you should probably go for your goal, otherwise not.

Also, at times you may realise that your goal is not what you are really looking for. During those times, it is absolutely fine to change your path.

Stick to your principles
The fact that Hiei does not tell Yukina about him being her brother because of his oath to Shigure shows that he is a man of principle. He has boundaries and is not willing to cross them. In life, it is important to set limits and have principles.

L from DN
L is a world-renowned detective who takes on the challenge of catching the mass murderer known as Kira. In his investigation, L becomes suspicious of Light Yagami and makes it his goal to prove that Light is Kira.
L, who also uses the aliases Hideki Ryuga, Ryuzaki, Eraldo Coil and Deneuve, the latter two for which he has developed reputations as the second—and third—best detectives in the world, is quite secretive and only communicates with the world through his assistant Watari. He never shows his face to the world, instead of representing himself with a capital L in Cloister Black font. After meeting the Kira investigation team, he requests that the task force refers to him as Ryuzaki for discretion. The Kira investigation team never learns his true name.

L's disheveled and languid appearance masks his great powers of deduction and insight. He tends to second-guess everything he is presented with and is extremely meticulous and analytical. He has several quirks such as preferring to crouch rather than sit, eating only sweet foods like desserts and fruits, and holding items very delicately. He stayed in England for five years, and during that time he was the champion in tennis for the England Junior Cup.

L suggests that even though he eats only sweet foods, he remains underweight because the brain uses the most calories of any organ in the body. He also says that if he sits normally, his reasoning ability would drop 40%.

L is very intelligent, though his disheveled and languid appearance masks his great powers of deduction and many question his abilities upon viewing him. L tends to second-guess everything he is presented with, and is extremely meticulous and analytical. He is good at deceiving his opponents, and is willing to take drastic measures to solve a case. Some of his tactics are quite bold, such as having death row inmate Lind L. Tailor pose as himself on live TV in order to draw out Kira, while others seem bizarre to those involved, such as handcuffing himself to suspected-Kira, Light Yagami. He is also shown to have a dry sense of humor, and he isn't above making sarcastic remarks to people. Although he tends to be polite, to some (such as Task Force member Shuichi Aizawa), L can seem condescending at times.

Using subterfuge, misinformation, disinformation, and an analytical knowledge of human nature to help lure a suspected murderer into a false sense of security and possibly make him carelessly over-confident, L sometimes gets what he wants through abnormal or possibly criminal channels. Whenever L gives percentages to indicate how much he suspects a person of committing a crime, such as "five percent," he may in fact be over ninety percent convinced of their culpability. Although L tells Light that he is among the least likely suspects with one of the lowest percentages of probability, in reality L is "pretty certain" that Light is Kira. As series writer Tsugumi Ohba said laughing, making light of L's tactics: "The truth is, he's a liar."

From his debut, L establishes himself as Light's definitive opponent. That is, he shows himself to be the sole character in the story who is capable of not only disproving Kira's godhood, but is also very real threat to Light's survival. While L lives, Light cannot be the God he seeks to be.

To repeat, L is the unmovable object to Light Yagami’s unstoppable force, but that in itself doesn’t make him on equal grounds with Kira in terms of the narrative. Whilst his role and legacy does achieve this, and L himself is Light's single main rival and equal, making the assumption that in the entirety of the Death Note series Ryuzaki himself is on par with Kira is a mistake. The cat and mouse dynamic between L and his legacy in relation to Light Yagami is what many believe to be the greatest part of the Manga, the former especially, but that particular section only spans half the plot. It’s important to note that whilst L and his personal hunt for Kira may be what makes people remember Death Note more than anything, making the claim that Ryuzaki was as much an antagonist as Light was a protagonist would only be true if the story had ended following the conclusion of that arc (also known as Episode 25 and Chapter 58). However, it didn't, and the story continued with new threats with new faces, and although they all link back to the same source in a thematically pleasing sense, Ryuzaki’s role wasn’t to be the equal character to Kira.

In my opinion, it was the role of L to parallel and personify different ideologies along with Light, acting as the other half of the same coin, as well as to demonstrate the evolution of Light’s god-complex; he provides an alternate to Kira’s justice. This can be seen as his more thematic duty, and duty from a story-telling perspective, but of course his character is loved for very different reasons.

THIRD FIGHT

Suzaku Kururugi from CG
Suzaku Kururugi is the anti-heroic deuteragonist of the anime and manga series Code Geass. He is an Honorary Citizen and soldier of the Holy Britannian Empire and the best friend and rival of Lelouch vi Britannia.

According to Lelouch, before the Britannian invasion of Japan, Suzaku was somewhat selfish, rarely putting others before himself. He also acted somewhat bratty when he first met Lelouch, beating Lelouch up and bullying him.

He dedicated his cause not to endorse terrorism or rebellion, which he believed would only result in the pointless killing. Unwilling to sacrifice the innocent, he also had a strong sense of loyalty, never questioning the orders of his superiors. Despite that, elders showed him to be willing to stab them in the back if necessary. Suzaku also wished to take responsibility for his actions, and his ultimate goal was to atone for the killing of his father.

Suzaku is the son of Japan's last prime minister, Genbu Kururugi. His existence was kept a secret from the public until after the war. Suzaku met Lelouch vi Britannia and his sister Nunnally vi Britannia when they moved to the Kururugi residence as a diplomatic peace trade. At first, Suzaku despised Lelouch because he thought he was a prince who didn't care about anyone. As time passed by, however, he came to know Lelouch better, and they soon became best friends. They became separated when Britannia invaded Japan but reunited in the Shinjuku Ghetto.

When Britannia began its invasion of Japan, Suzaku got mortified by the violence, and his father's belief that resisting to the bitter end was preferable to surrender. Unable to change his father's mind, Suzaku murdered him during a heated exchange. Britannia covered up the incident, and Suzaku's life spared, while the government was thrown into disarray and surrendered to Britannia. Lelouch believes that, had Genbu lived, Japan would have likely been torn apart by war once the other major powers decided to intervene. His guilt over the incident causes Suzaku to constantly place himself on the frontlines in the hope of atoning his actions by death. It also inspires Suzaku's belief that the ends achieved by using the wrong means are meaningless since he created peace through murder.

After firing the F.L.E.I.J.A. warhead under the command of Lelouch's Geass, he decides to achieve his desired results regardless of the means, even if it means joining forces with his enemy, Lelouch, and killing people to make true his objectives and ideals. Despite that fact, Suzaku is still interested in achieving a world where everyone can live happily and have a tomorrow, as seen in the last episode when all the acts of Lelouch and Suzaku were to achieve that world.

In the eyes of the world, Kururugi Suzaku is a terrible knight, not to mention a terrible person. He is a traitor in all respects–he has betrayed his country, his people, his morality. He’s almost as hated as Emperor Lelouch himself–and undoubtedly his “funeral” was the furthest thing from well-attended.

It is only in private that the mask of brutality comes off and yet you get the sense that Suzaku keeps up the mask even then. When Lelouch is falling apart and drowns in self-doubt, Suzaku pushes him to remember their mission, to remember Zero Requiem. There is no room for weakness–they must play their roles perfectly.

How ironic it is for Suzaku to lower his mask exactly when he dons the mask of Zero? The assassination of Lelouch, though clearly and intentionally public, is also an incredibly intimate moment between our knight and king. His acceptance of his fate as the new Zero and the conditions upon which Lelouch dictates to him with his dying breath are characteristics of it.

Ultimately, one can look at Lelouch and Suzaku as two sides of the same coin, and thus this is why I believe Suzaku is the best deuteragonist out there.

Obi Wan Kenobi
Obi Wan is well known in the Star Wars universe. He was always a very important character, but was not the deuteragonist of the first movies (4,5,6).

But he became the leading partner of the main character, Anakin, and his past, motivations, failures, love etc were explored deeply. Obi Wan with the Prequel 1,2,3 and the multiple seasons of The Clone Wars became the real deuteragonist of the franchise and even stole it sometimes. Obi was sometimes doing his own things, having his own fights, and his own episodes.

Now lets explain a bit Obi Wan as a character :

We met Obi-Wan in the phantom menace as a Padawan, a young apprentice, under master Qui Gon Jin.

Obi was brash and young but this movie was the real beginning of his story : he met the young Anakin, lost his master thanks to Darth maul mighty double blade, and in the end was tasked to train the young Skywalker.

Obi Wan grew to be a really skilled Jedi, power wise, the guy was still learning but was strong. And he was one of the most calm, diplomatic, and efficient Jedi in the whole Order.

Obi Wan is often the smart one, he doesn't act without thinking first, can have good battle plans, and his wits often helped him to leave battle with the win. Obi Wan never was pure power and sheer might, but craft and skill.

Obi Wan has also a great talent the guy likes to troll and taunt, he is often the one trashtalking people and he kept the spirit even in the worst situations :

Obi is a great deuteragonist because he also has his side quest and his sides story. Everything is not linked to Anakin. He had a lot of screen time.

Obi Wan defeated Maul in the first episode, was tasked to check on Kamino and fought jango fett, beat Grievous and even in the end was the one beating Anakin.

Other exemple : Obi Wan had an episode where he faked his death to infiltrate a crime syndicate and took the identity of a bounty hunter :

Obi had lots of solo adventures.

Obi Wan can be explained with 3 great relationships :

Obi Wan and Anakin, Obi Wan and Satine, and Obi Wan and Darth Maul.

Obi and Anakin :

Obi Wan and Anakin relationship is interesting : he didn't want Anakin at first but he promised a death bed Qui Gon to raise and train him. But Obi Wan wasn't really old at that time and barely a Jedi knight. Quickly he took Anakin under his wing and they became close. Anakin boldness and talent coupled with Obi Wan brain made a great team. Obi wasn't the perfect little jedi who was just followed the code blindly with a huge stick into his ass, he was loose enough to adapt and understand others. But he was still deeply attached to the Jedi ways and the force.

Obi Wan soon enough became Anakin big brother and mentor before being his master. They knew like 1000 tough to extreme situations and often managed to leave in one piece doing things their own way.

Anakin ofetn proved to be a difficult pupil and Obi still had to order him and put him straight from time to time.

Finding the real balance between the friend, the mentor, the master, was difficult for a young knight and then a young master especially when tasked training the chosen one but Obi Wan did the best of his capacity.

And obviously the end was pure greek tragedy. Obi Wan vs Anakin was both sad and spectacular.

But Obi Wan even after everything and the end of the republic Obi Wan still had faith in the force and didn't lose all hope. He took care of Luke, Anakin son.

Obi Wan and Satine :

The Jedi order forbid all attachment and love. Yet Obi Wa was not made of stone and loved someone even tough he resisted till the end. But Obi respected the code and never confessed to Satine knowing thatif he said the words he would have to leave to order.

Satine and Obi Wan fought and argued all the time like an old couple, but it was only sheer sexual attraction and feelings.

Satine was the new ruler of Mandalore and Obi Wan went there to protect her and save her.

This relationship proved that Obi Wan wasn't like the other Jedi, he was a lot more human, prone to real feelings, and it showed the difficulty he had between his duty and his heart.

Obi Wan and Darth Maul :

Darth Maul is maybe Obi Wan main enemy. Yeah Anakin/Vader became his bane but Maul really impacted all his life, from the beginning to the end.

Maul took Obi Wan master Qui Gon. Maul took Obi Wan loved one Satine. Maul tracked him everywhere during the whole clone wars and they had an ultimate fight when both were old.

Obi Wan hated Maul at first for killing Qui Gon but over the years he learnt how and why Maul became like that and he understood him. Obi Wan never again yield to rage or hate against Maul (Maul main theme). Even when Maul killed Satine Obi Wan was distressed but didn't turned dark.

After decades of fighting Obi killed Maul but not for somr great revenge but only to stop and free Maul from his hate and miserable life. In the end Maul died in Obi arms.
