I have a hard time rating Goku

on one hand I know that Goku is an iconic OG. That kaioken. Super Saiyan was beyond hype at the time and I remember the early 10y old me being over the top seeing that. Also Frieza fight and Cell fight was also quite good.

So I can’t lie and say that DBZ and Goku are lame as fuck. It’s false. Goku character works.

But as an adult Goku doesn’t appeal me at all anymore. It’s just fight after fight, new hair color after new hair color, 0 story, 0 character development etc etc. It’s 0 deep. And the guy isn’t even as interesting as Végéta or Picolo or most of the cast.

My on the spot hypothesis to why that is often the case may be very simply due exactly to the fact that they are not the main protagonist who we follow along for most the vast majority of the stories, when these side characters come in and cranks the action/ intrigue up making things get real they will make a lasting impression and associate them with something big is about to happen when they make a reappearance

There's definitely truth in that.


But the top tier protagonists differentiate themselves because they actually carry the show. You're hyped to see them, even tho we follow their story and they are constantly on screen/panel. What sets them apart from your average/below average protagonist like idk Luffy, Meliodas, Boruto, Deku etc, is that you wanna see them on panel.

Goku is the quintessential shonen protagonist. He's the mold most others are built off. Goku works because he is the first of his name, lord of the shonen manga, and progenitor of the archetype. He's the blueprint of the now ubiquitously known shonen MC.

Goku's iconic and his persona transcends manga, he's the guy that got most dudes going into gyms lmao.

But yes, in terms of writing Goku is nothing special. He gets extra points for being the first of his kind, but that's pretty much it.

for me Goku sucks as a character now but I have fond childhood memories of him and there's no way to deny that he is "THE" global anime icon
