If there’s any story that’s been adapted and reinterpreted across generations and mediums, it’s Sherlock Holmes. From classic literature to blockbuster films and prestige TV, the legendary detective has been examined from almost every angle. But Moriarty the Patriot dares to do something different: it tells the story from the perspective of Holmes’s greatest adversary, Professor Moriarty. More than just a villain origin story, the series reframes Moriarty as an antihero - a man driven not by greed or power, but by the burning desire to bring justice to a deeply unjust society. And what’s remarkable is how quickly the story makes you sympathize with him - within a few chapters, you’re not just understanding Moriarty, you’re rooting for him.

Fans of detective fiction know Moriarty as the brilliant 'Napoleon of crime,' a shadowy foil to Holmes’s genius. In Arthur Conan Doyle’s original works, Moriarty appears only briefly but looms large as Holmes’s intellectual equal and nemesis. Moriarty the Patriot builds on that mystique, using the vagueness of his canon backstory as fertile ground for reinvention. In this version, William James Moriarty is not born into privilege - he’s a gifted orphan adopted into a noble family alongside his brother Louis. When the cruelty of the Moriarty household becomes unbearable, William, Louis, and their adoptive brother Albert conspire to destroy the family and take on William’s identity. From then on, the trio uses their social status and intellect to orchestrate the downfall of the British aristocracy from within.


Set in the late 19th century British Empire - a time of profound social inequality - the show establishes a world where the poor are disposable and the rich are untouchable. The Moriarty brothers, now nobles themselves, dedicate their lives to tearing down this rigged system. By day, William is a respected professor and mathematical genius. By night, he acts as a crime consultant, taking on cases from people whose lives have been destroyed by the privileged. These are not simple revenge stories - they are deeply structured moral plays. William listens to the grievances of the oppressed, confirms the guilt of the elites involved, and then offers a way out: a carefully constructed opportunity for the victims to take justice into their own hands. But only if they consent, William never acts without their approval.


This is where the series gets morally complex. William doesn’t commit the murders himself; instead, he empowers the wronged to carry out revenge in ways that ensure they escape punishment. His plans are clinical, meticulous, and disturbingly efficient. From poisoned wine to well-placed fires, each crime is symbolic as well as effective. And yet, William never feels like a bloodthirsty killer. He feels like someone burdened by the cruelty of the world and determined to reset the scales, no matter the cost. His charisma and cool-headed brilliance mask a deep well of fury at the injustice embedded in British society, and his transformation into the infamous 'Professor Moriarty' is portrayed not as a descent, but a conscious choice.


What keeps Moriarty the Patriot from romanticizing this violence too much is that it never lets you forget what William is doing. He is not a hero in the traditional sense. He manipulates people, coerces them, and uses fear and deception as tools. His end goal, a more equal world, is noble, but his means are undeniably dark. The show asks a pointed question: when the system is corrupt beyond repair, is it moral to destroy it using immoral methods? William answers yes - and while the audience might agree in the moment, the unsettling implications linger. This moral tension is what makes him such a compelling lead.

A major part of the show’s appeal also lies in its presentation. Hikaru Miyoshi’s art renders William and his conspirators as refined, elegant figures, almost too perfect for the grim deeds they commit. There’s a bishonen air to the characters that enhances the story’s emotional resonance while drawing in readers familiar with anime and manga’s dramatic style. The Victorian backdrop is richly detailed, both in its aesthetic and in how it supports the plot. The foggy alleys of London, the lavish but cold aristocratic homes, and the contrast between upper- and lower-class life all ground the narrative in a time of upheaval and hypocrisy.



Eventually, William’s activities attract the attention of Sherlock Holmes himself, and the series pivots into a thrilling game of cat and mouse between two brilliant minds on opposing sides of justice. But the twist is clear: unlike most adaptations where Holmes is the moral center, Moriarty the Patriot makes the case for Moriarty as the one with a clearer vision of societal change, even if his hands are far bloodier.



Moriarty has made himself into the ultimate evil, thus forcing people to ally against him, and stay united, and thus fulfilling his coveted dream. And the funny thing, he has already designated a man who shall stop him and be the shinning light of the world. That man is none other than Sherlock Holmes

But his intelligence isn't just used for survival,Yuuichi takes a certain thrill in the chaos. He doesn't just endure the Tomodachi Game; he plays it like a predator circling prey, unafraid to lie, threaten, or mentally break his opponents to achieve his goals. His moral compass is murky at best, and while he claims to value his friends, it's clear he ultimately only trusts himself.

He's someone who walks into psychological warfare with a smile, because deep down, he knows this is where he thrives. He doesn’t flinch at violence, doesn’t hesitate to outwit his closest allies if it’s necessary, and doesn’t care if people label him a villain. And that’s what makes him so compelling: he’s not a traditional protagonist fighting for truth or justice, he’s a manipulator, a tactician, and maybe even a bit of a sociopath.


Yuuichi stands apart as something else entirely, a lone wolf who thrives in the darkest parts of the game. His mind is his greatest weapon, and his willingness to cross lines others won’t even approach makes him a terrifying force to watch. He doesn’t just survive the Tomodachi Game, he bends it to his will. Watching Yuuichi work is like watching a fire start slowly in a quiet room: calm at first, until it’s burning everything down.
